Not a romance novel or really chick lit drivel, but a good story that involves people who meet/fall in love/struggle/whatever and ends well.  I really am not interested in a seriously unhappy ending, but something like the Time Traveler's Wife (has serious and sad themes but still ends hopefully).  I appreciate any suggestions!

Hank and Chloe by JoAnne Mapson   and the sequel   Loving Chloe.   Good novels.

Dalva by Jim Harrison and the sequel   The Road Home    I read these books about once a year.

The Physician by Noah Gordon   Also has a sequel     Shaman.     Best book I read in years.  Historical,  nontheless fascinating.

The Tea Rose and the sequel, The Winter Rose by Jennifer Donnelly.  Well written historical fiction/love story.

The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett.  Such a good book.  One of my faves.

I saw this mentioned on another post for a book suggestion:

www.literature-map.com

You enter the author's name and it gives you a bunch of similar authors.  It's pretty cool.

Loved Walked In and the sequel Belong to Me by Marisa de los Santos.  Not torrid romances or bodice rippers.  The stories are very good and very thoughtful.  :)

Water for Elephants by S. Gruen.  A quirky love story between a married circus performer and a circus veterinarian, set in a travelling circus during the Great Depression.  It's a wonderful novel that I never wanted to end.  It will made into a movie to be released in 2011 and will star Reese Witherspoon and Robert Pattison.  The best book I've read in ages.

Hard to find, but a delight and well worth the hunt: Sophia's Secret / The Winter Sea by Susanna Kearsley (title depends on what country it was released in, but it's the same book).  Debbie

I wanted to add a book, often just listed as romance, but truly well written and fascinating:  Flowers from the Storm by Laura Kinsale.  One of the best books I have ever read.  It is a heartrending love story and a novel about the medical practices of the time.  How the author gets into the head of a man who is rendered speechless by a stroke is unique and outstanding writing.

Dirt Music by Tim Winton.  A very quirky love story - with a majorly wounded hero - that makes you ache inside (in a good way).

I ended up a bit in love with Luther Fox myself and the book made me want to read more by Winton, which I haven't gotten around to doing yet...

And don't be fooled by the title - The Passions of Emma by Penelope Williamson - is a beautiful love story and a discussion of class differences in the late 1800's to early 1900's.   A great book that treats the ignorance of the upper classes of the day with more compassion than they probably deserved.

Has anyone mentioned The Long Walk Home by Will North?   I love stories of Americans abroad in the British Isles.  Man goes to Wales to keep a promise to x-wife.  Meets the love of his life at a beautiful, remote B&B..........Luverly.

Don't mind stories that end with life creating endings that do not leave the lovers together.  One that does is Major Pettigrew's Last Stand by Helen Simonson about an older man who falls in love in his elder years.  Also enjoyed Maisie Dobbs by Jacqueline Winspear, a historical mystery/romance which is poignant and lovely but does not end with the lovers together.

Not sure if this is the kind of book you are looking for it is dark and has some serious themes in it, but it is an amazing love story.

A Thousand Splendid Suns
