Found a like new copy of this one in the thrift store last week.  Has anyone read it?  My copy was printed in Australia, has tiny print and is still 452 pages! I am hoping to get to it this summer but would be interested in your comments.  Thanks!

I read it in my early teens and liked it.  I don't remember anything about it, though.  I looked at a plot summary just now to see if that would bring some of it back and ... nada.

I just requested a copy. I was reading this last summer at the lake and someone stole it! I left it sitting on the picnic table while I went swimming with a friend and when I came back, it was gone! Everything else was right where we left it, sitting on the table, only the book was gone, so it had to be an evil reader who came to the lake unprepared and without a book. So, I oh-so-casually strolled around and spied on every single person there, but never saw anyone with my missing book. I did see two teenagers doing things that I really wish I hadn't seen, but they didn't have my book, and, trust me, I would have seen it if they had it hidden anywhere on them. Ew.

Anyway, I'm  glad you mentioned it because I really wanted to read this one! I was only about 50 pages in when my last copy was stolen. I actually bought it new which made me even more angry.

So many years ago I don't remember it very clearly, but I do remember liking it, about feuding families and star-crossed lovers in the 17th century.    I think I'll put it on my TBR-again pile.

Yes, it's about young lovers in the Highlands of Scotland if I'm remembering correctly.  Sort of a Romeo/Juliet kind of thing with wilder surroundings.  The cookies ARE good too- shortbread, hence the name I think.

I like the cookies, and yes, I read the book about three or four years ago, and liked it too ;)

That's so odd that someone stole it, Valli.

For those who are short on credits and want to read Lorna Doone, here it is online: Lorna Doone.

ETA: If you read it online, you won't have your book stolen as Valli did. Of course, I can't guarantee that your laptop won't be stolen.

I read it a couple of years ago and loved it. It takes a while to get used to his prose but after that I was flying.

Valli, next time you leave a book all alone, you should tie a string to it and hold on to the end.  If you feel a tug on the string, pull hard and you never know who you're going to catch.  Could be any one of us.  =)

I also bought Lorna Doone at a library book sale a few months ago.

Would anyone be interested in a "read-together" of the book this summer?
