I had a book go lost yesterday.

Earlier in the week the sender sent a PM saying they had to mail it late (I just assumed she sent it that day...she could have sent it earlier) but sent it Express. Since it didn't come overnight, I assumed she sent it Priority. That's supposed to take just 2-3 days according to the USPS website and it's been 5, so maybe she sent it First Class and just doesn't know the different names.

Anyway, my question is, if in 2 weeks I still don't have it, should I go ahead and order a second copy? Or since she said she sent it, should I wait longer? It isn't in the Help Docs how long to wait if they say they mailed it, just late.

Would it be out of line to PM again and clarify that she did mail it this second time she said did?

Yup, I would PM and ask again. Maybe after a few more days.

Did she mark it mailed with in the allowed time frame? If she didn't the system kicks in and orders you another copy from the next in line. Then you may end up with 2 copies of the same book. (I've had this happen)

If she did mark it mailed , and told you in a PM that she has finally mailed it, wait a few days, you will probably recieve it. (I've also had this happen)

I think that's a little uncool for the member to tell you after the fact that it was mailed late.  I know it happens a lot, but I do not understand why people insist on marking books mailed when, in fact, they are not.  I've had it happen where I place a request on a Saturday night, and I get an email a couple of hours later saying the book has been mailed.  Really?  Even marking something mailed on the day you PLAN to mail it seems like a rule violation to me, because life can and does get in the way.

Books can be dropped in mail boxes so even though the post office wasnt open it could have been mailed.

I mail stuff on Sat & Sun nights quite a bit.   If I'm goign out anywhere and have a book light enough to go with stamps-I'll slap on  stamps and put it in the blue bin.  I've also put books in my mail box on a Sunday with stamps ont hem and then marked them mailed-even though they won't technically go out until Monday.  But that's usually when I'm going on a trip or the weather is bad and I know I won't  be going anywhere.  (I have a good weatherproof mail box-but a long treck to the mail box in bad weather).

Whether or not you personally mail books at midnight on Saturday (I am not exaggerating) is beside the point.  I've seen people here admit they fudge...and I also remember hearing of at least one person who had her account shut down because she marked her books mailed, but was injured in an accident before she actually mailed them.

I'll give it a few more days. I don't want to be too pushy. In her PM, though, it just sounded like she'd mailed it even before that day, which is why I'm now wondering.

She did mark it mailed on time (I said in the OP it went lost, not that it timed out). She then said she had to mail it really late when I PMed last week shortly before it went lost. It's not a WL book so I don't have to worry about the second copy. Unless I'm supposed to wait longer than the 2 weeks the Help Docs says after a book goes lost since she said a second time she mailed it.

I don't mind late mailings (as long as this book shows up I'll be fine. I just wonder how long I should have to wait since according to her I should have it already), but when people admit they do it all the time, I agree, it's a bit extreme. There is one member I saw say all her books are mailed late and she doesn't care. I hope she at least PMs the requester's about it.

Update:

I received the book in today's mail.

She did mail it before she sent the PM and sent it Priority. I guess there is a difference in delivery estimates if it's not mailed in one of the Priority boxes or envelopes? I don't know.

Either way, I don't have to wonder what I'll need to do at a later date!

Thanks for the help. smiley

Even marking something mailed on the day you PLAN to mail it seems like a rule violation to me, because life can and does get in the way.

But, it is allowed according to PBS rules. You have 48 hours after marking mailed to mail a book.

and I also remember hearing of at least one person who had her account shut down because she marked her books mailed, but was injured in an accident before she actually mailed them.

I think it would be foolish of PBS to punish people like that, when after all, PBS actually works much better in this case ... sure, the requestors are out some time, but the books get marked lost, credits get returned, and the books get reordered, all completely AUTOMATICALLY without needing any manual intervention. Nobody loses anything except some time.

So, marking mailed and then forgetting to mail, while annoying to the book requestor, is a problem that resolves itself very nicely.

You can have the opposite case, where people mail the book first, and then forget to mark it mailed .... and this causes complete chaos. If you are the receiver and you are very lucky, you receive the first copy before the second copy of the book gets mailed and the sender of the second copy will maybe agree to cancel the book order (if they printed the label already) or maybe you can cancel it yourself (if they haven't). In any case, fixing this situation requires PMing other people and then hoping they will answer soon plus be amenable to do what you need. Not to mention if you don't receive the first copy before the 2nd copy is mailed, then you don't have to mark it received (if you have the 2nd copy coming) and then the sender of the first book is out the book plus the credit (which is fair, because after all, the problem is their fault, but on the other hand, they are losing out on something they normally would have received), and you as the receiver now have to deal with 2 copies of the book, which is not as good an outcome for everybody as the first scenario, which resolves itself very nicely without anybody needing to do anything, and nobody loses out on credits or postage.

So, mailing and then forgetting to mark it mailed is not only annoying, it cuses a bunch of work/messages needed to at least 2, but likely 3 people, not to mention, someone loses out on credits or postage, usually.

You are not allowed to mark a book mailed before mailing except in the following cases. It is not something that you can just randomly do.

  • It is okay to mark your book mailed before you have mailed it if:

    • The deadline date falls on a postal holiday
    • Your computer/Internet access is unreliable
    • You plan to mail the book on your way out of town
