I sent out a book in early March that was never marked received.  I sent the requestor a couple of PM's during that time, and when I never got a response, I checked and she was listed as "No Longer An Account Holder".  According to my account page, the date of system action was 4/2 (tomorrow).  Based on what I read on the discussion forums, I planned to wait until the deadline passed.

To my surprise, on Monday morning (3/31), the book was listed as "Lost".  I wasn't expecting that to happen until 4/2, and I wondered how it could have been declared lost when the requestor isn't a member any more - did PBS declare it lost?

I'm not really worried about losing the credit, but I just wondered if I handled this correctly, in case it happens again some time.

I can't believe someone would cancel their account right in the middle of a transaction!

Karen, if a book goes lost when an account is either inactive or closed you should receive your credit, regardless of whether you purchased DC. I'd use the "Contact Us" at the bottom of the page to ask about it, because I'm pretty sure that the sender is supposed to receive a credit by the system in these situations.

Karen,

Did you get your credit or not?  If you didn't, you should contact the site owners (use Contact Us - Send Feedback at the bottom of any page) and tell them about it.

Someone cannot just "cancel their account right in the middle of a transaction" - the only way to close an account is to use Contact Us - and it's for this very reason.  The site owners want to make sure that any orders that this account holder is involved in get wrapped up fairly.

So if you're out a credit, please try and resolve it that way.  If you're not, then I wouldn't worry about it - the reason for the lost book is quite clear in this case.

after 26 days if a book goes lost and the person is no longer an account holder you will receive your credit.

check your credit history and you should see it there

All lost books are declared lost by the PBS system. No requestor can declare a book lost. All they can do that would cause a book to be marked lost is fail to mark it received.

The credit was taken from the requestor when they ordered the book. If the book goes lost on an inactive or closed account, the system will mark it received. I don't know how long this takes.  I would give it a few days and then contact PBS if you don't see your credit.

Thanks for all the advice!  I contacted PBS, and the book was changed from lost to found - not sure how that happened exactly (according to the email, the member I sent it to was having problems reporting books as received, which may be why she's no longer a member) but it all seems to be resolved now.  And I got my credit.

This was one of the first books I sent out after I joined PBS, before I figured out how to use PBS delivery confirmation.  I've gotten more savvy since then!
