Is it just me or are more books being "lost in the mail" I've been here for a long time and have never had so many books go missing and it's not Hurricane Sandy. I've also  published a book and have never had any of my shipments turn up missing so am wondering if there are members who are saying they sent something and didn't or what. Any insights?

No, I've not noticed any more books lost in the mail. I think I've had 2 sets go lost that I mailed and a couple coming to me as well. One of the sets that went lost coming to me, I'm pretty sure weren't ever mailed but that's going to happen every so often.

I'm getting more unpostables though. My first 4 years here I rarely got an unpostable. Now at least every other month I'm getting a few. I've received nearly 2,000 books though so maybe in the scheme of things it's not so many.

I am seeing less scans on DCs. But I always thought that mailing times always went funky in November and December. Between weather and holiday mail, books always seem to come either faster or slower.

Thanks - I've had at least 2 books that never made it in the last month and it looks like one more so far this month although that could change tomorrow. I get a lot of unpostables but if someone lets me know in advance how bad it is sometimes I'll take it anyway because I want to read everything that author wrote. Thanks for responding.

I had a rash of lost incoming books last spring, not so much lately.  IMO more are sender error than USPS error.  I've mailed over 1,000 books, none lost (although one tried but was recovered).  I've received over 850 books, with 13 showing lost...at least one never made it to the PO, the sender pm'd they'd had a car stolen between home and end of the day PO stop.

As Emily mentioned, I've also noticed more timed-out (or lost) transactions around the holidays.

I've only had one go lost but I really don't think it was ever mailed.  It was sent by someone who only has a handful of books on here & they were all added to PBS the same day this book was supposedly mailed.  I assumed they were a "new" member & wanted the free credits by posting the books.

I've been here three years; nothing I've sent has ever been lost, and I've only had one lost coming to me.  I, too, question whether it was actually sent.

ive only been a member a few months and had one of my earlier mailed out books go missing, however I think that was due to the horrible weather that FL had at the time. Even before mailing out books, I had read the posts about this and decided to keep all my PO receipts just to prove that they were sent if anyone of those books got lost.

first 6 months of this year I would of said yes, but lately it's just been more RWAPs or getting books that never should have been posted. Why can't people recognize that eventually the book is just too worn, dirty, tear on cover too long to be postable any longer?

I've seen an uptick in books being mailed late. Not just a few days late, but weeks late. Some were mailed a day or two before the book is to go lost. I received a book yesterday that was mailed 15 days after being marked mailed per PO printed postage. These are not coming from Sandy affected areas.  I just figure I've gotten an unusual number of people who couldn't care less about the rules.

Do be sure to use the special RWAP for late mailings! It does not ask for a credit return. Just puts a little more weight behind using the spaces in the date questionnaire.

Speaking of lost books, I could have a set that I sent out go lost, or something. Hopefully they're just misplaced by the PO. I've been in contact with the person and she's doing some checking. Anyhow, has anyone ever seen this before:

Undeliverable as Addressed - SNOHOMISH,WA

I verified the address. It's her address. It's a regular street address, her home not a multiple mailbox situation. It appears the PO is saying that it was misaddressed, which it was not.

I mailed a book oct 29 using DC. It is still not marked at the post office that sorts for our area as of nov 10. Last month I got my label back along with a form telling me to describe my package contents. The package was lost a month prior. Hopefully it reaches it's recipient. I have more stories I could share.

Susan, it could mean that the address is smeared or missing.   I always put tape over addresses as I have an inkjet printer.  The slightest whiff of weather removes the ink.

But I did have one book, mailed on time, that took over 4 months to get to me.

Snohomish is a couple cities over from me, generally we have very good mail in this area.  Hopefully with postal staff looking for the package it will turn up soon.

I also tape over the label, as we also have a wet climate it's easy for them to get a bit of rain or mist which makes the label unreadable.

ETA - Although I believe many late books are due to members mailing late (or not at all), there's no doubt that some are legitimately delayed or lost in the mail.  LIke Emily, every once in a while we have a member post that they have received books weeks or months late (or even a year later).  Even though counter postage confirms the sender mailed correctly...the package was MIA for an extended period of time.

I've had several go missing both in and out lately. No one is using DC except me, that really annoys me. It's .19 people! I have 6 books on the way, none with DC, and 3 of them I already know were lost because the wrapper was returned to the sender 3 days after she sent it with no books in it. The P.O. is a mess.

The only thing I've noticed is that receivers seem to be taking longer and longer to mark books received.  I use DC and can see when the PO says the package was delivered.  I've already gotten my credits so it's no big deal but I have been surprised about the gap between delivery and marking the books received.

My vote is that they are saying the sent something they didn't. I just received a book today postmarked 11/8. Funny thing is... sender clicked on "book has been mailed" on 10/15. That's just rude. Oh, and I'm lucky it arrived in one piece. It was just sent in a regular manila envelope - not padded and no other wrapping. This is the kind of person that gives PBS a bad name and unfortunately, I've met a lot of these people in the few months I've been here.
