I am including a couple questions in this post, both pertaining to each other.  First, I'll explain the situatuion; I mailed a book and the time is almost out until it's considered lost.  I know that books can go lost, which could be the case, but I know sometimes people don't mark it as received hence the reminder that gets printed out along with the member's address.  I want to know if you can see how long someone has been a member if they don't have a profile.  This would help me determine if they are new, but I did see they had only a few books posted so they could very well be new.  IF the book is lost, what happens after that?  Do I lose out on that credit?  I did PM them to ask and to make sure they hadn't just forgotten, is that alright to do or would you be offended if someone PMed you to ask if you had received the book?

IF the book is lost, what happens after that?  Do I lose out on that credit?

If you mailed it with PBS postage, you received an instant credit, which you keep if the book goes lost. If you mailed with PBS DC, you got a credit the first time the book was scanned after mailing, which you keep if the book goes lost. If you didn't use either of these to mail, then you would receive the credit when the book is marked "Received". If the book goes lost, you will not receive the credit (but nothing is taken away from you, since you don't have the credit yet). The requestor will receive their credit back when the book goes lost, no matter how it was mailed.

I did PM them to ask and to make sure they hadn't just forgotten, is that alright to do or would you be offended if someone PMed you to ask if you had received the book?

Yes, it is OK to PM, just be polite. And, it is a good idea to wait until just before the book goes lost to PM. Sometimes it just takes along time for books to get where they are going.

I want to know if you can see how long someone has been a member if they don't have a profile.

You can try searching for their name in the forums as a poster. Because when you post, it says how long you have been a member in the right corner. You could look at their bookshelf and see when their oldest book was posted (not foolproof, but can give you an idea).

Hi Rachel,

I want to know if you can see how long someone has been a member if they don't have a profile.

Unfortunately, you cannot tell how long someone has been a member if they don't have a profile.  You can look and see the date that the books were posted on their bookshelf, but that may not necessarily tell you anything.

IF the book is lost, what happens after that?  Do I lose out on that credit?

If they never mark the book received, then yes, you will lose your credit.

I did PM them to ask and to make sure they hadn't just forgotten, is that alright to do or would you be offended if someone PMed you to ask if you had received the book?

At this late date, I say that is fine to PM the receiver.  Keep in mind that they may be on vacation or they may not have daily access to a computer.

Mary

I was polite in my PM, I just wanted to make sure that they hadn't forgotten or anything.  I am just hoping that the book isn't lost and waiting for a reply.  Thanks to those who replied and answered my questions.
