Pinkerton detective agency? Undercover agents? Romance? History? Dastardly deeds? Hmm, yes please!

From just a little bit of the book’s plot, I was eager to get my hands on this novel. It has those qualities to the story structure and characters that set it apart, especially in today’s historical fiction genre. I wasn’t disappointed.

There is much to love about this book. Ellie is a rookie Pinkerton detective, playing not one, but two operatives. The quirky and funny things that happen to her once she is in disguise, keep the story an element of lighthearted. But there is plenty of serious to go around.

The mystery of the silver mine thieves was well portrayed and even a bit surprising once I found out who the real villains were.

The romance was so sweet! Ellie might have fallen in love, but what happens when the man who loves you…actually loves the woman you’ve become to solve the mystery? If that doesn’t make you want this story nothing else will.

Story was solid. Plot was well founded. The writing was enjoyable. The novel has that star quality about it that makes you want to keep reading. I loved the uniqueness of it all.

Overall, four stars to a good book. One I’m glad I took the time to read.

This review is my honest opinion. Thanks to the publishers through CFBA for my copy to review.

I have read a couple of Carol Cox's others books and enjoyed them. But this one took me by surprise! I LOVED this one! The whole Pinkerton detective plot pulled me in as I love spy or detective books. The book opens with setting up the later plot and giving a background of Ellie. But then it plunges you into the middle of a mystery, romance and lots of disguises! I thought the first meeting of the Pinkerton detectives and Ellie was quite hysterical and when I laughed, my sister wanted to know what was going on:) The characters are well fleshed out and the detail is well done. I felt like I was actually in Arizona!

Steven was quite the sweetheart and I had to laugh at certain times with him and Lavinia. Believe me, you will think it is funny when he thinks it is an old woman and she is making eyes at him!! He is very protective and sweet. Jessie Monroe was a little bit different and I can see why Ellie wanted to be more like her but yet, Jessie was a bit flighty at times:)

So, if you want to take a vacation somewhere without leaving the comforts of home, pick up this book. I can't really tell you much more or I will be giving away some of the book. You just have to pick it up for yourself:)

I received a copy of this book for review purposes. All thoughts are 100% mine.

I enjoyed this little historical suspense novel by Carol Cox. Ellie, the heroine is a theatrical wardrobe assistant in desperate need of a new position. When she hears that the Pinkerton Agency is hiring, she uses her skills with make up and costumes to get the job. Good story, which I recommend to others.
