Hello all.  :)  (This is my first post ever in the forums, so if I'm doing something wrong, please forgive me!)

I just wanted to express my happiness over reading Erich Segal's Love Story.  I purchased it at my used bookstore yesterday and finished it earlier today.  Admittedly, I bought it because it reminded me of Taylor Swift's song that I love SO much - which is also my username.  :P

I was surprised at how much I loved the novel!  I think this was partly due to the fact that it was awhile ago and I didn't expect to take a liking to it as much as I did.  I guess it just goes to show that a good love story is as timeless as it's characters.  The ending was emotionally jarring and through me for a loop, even though one character admits what's going to happen from the first line in the novel.

I'm glad I found this "oldie but goodie."  I think it should be required reading for engaged couples!  :)

That's the great thing about romance novels, Lisa; happy endings & neither one of the main characters dies:P

I thought Love Story had a sad ending with one party dying.  Is this the same book that was made into a movie starring Ryan O'Neal and Ali McGraw (not sure if I got her name correct)?

It does and yeah, Ali McGraw dies.  Books & movies like Love Story and Sommersby are why romance novels are better.  Oh... and Cold Mountain by Charles Frazier.  Great love story, tragic ending.  I'd rather read a good romance:P

There's a movie?  I'll have to look around and rent it if I see it.  Thanks for letting me know!

I received coupons in the mail from the Half Price Books mailing list letting me know that they're having a big sale this week, so I plan on picking up the sequel shortly.

I'll also look into Sommersby, Kim.  Thanks for the suggestion!

You might NOT want to pick up the sequel if you loved the first book so much. I remember when Oliver's Story came out. Most people hated it.

I was thinking about Love Story again as Ryan O'Neal went through the exact same thing in real life, losing Farrah Fawcett a couple weeks ago.

Oh, I guess I'm showing my age, huh?  I'm 21.  It probably shows.  :P

That's okay - without y'alls help, I wouldn't have known there was a movie, so thank you!

Lol, I was thinking the same thing.  I was a teenager - but definitely present & accounted for - when that movie came out:P

I didn't see it when the movie first came out (although I was around) but saw it as a movie of the week on TV.  Even with the commercial breaks, it was a very good movie and of course I loved the book.  I had a copy of Oliver's Story for years but never got around to reading it.  I just knew the sequel wouldn't be as good as the original and couldn't get myself to read it.
