Hi all - here's a strange one. I have a few children's books - in good shape & really cute but now I'm wondering if they are ok to post - they're mostly little stories and the stories talk about a good luck charm but how the little girl comes to realize she doesn't need a magic charm because the strength lies within her. Each book originally sold with the magic charm attached to the book but the books I posted no longer have the charm attached. What do you think about posting these without the charm attached? I don't know that you'd EXPECT to get a charm with the book if you just got the story book but I'm now having second thoughts. Have about 4 or 5 of them.

Sounds fine to post.  Under "Is my book OK to post here" in the help docs:

Books that require accompanying NON-Media Materials to be usable: NO

  • Non - media items cannot be sent by Media mail
  • Example: a book that requires a decoder for its proper use.  Such a book must not be posted here.

Books that originally came with NON-Media Materials that are not necessary for the book to be useful: YES and the non-media items are not required to accompany the book

  • As long as the materials are not REQUIRED to use the book (ie, jewelry), these CAN be posted here.
  • The requestor should NOT expect original non-Media items to accompany the used book.

If anyone questions why they haven't received the "non-media" materials, then direct them to the above explanation.  You do NOT have to forewarn the requestors that they will not be receiving the "non-media" materials either.

Wreckgirl stated the conditions for posting non-media materials.  And scalta explained there is no need to send a message to the requesters explaining the charms won't be included.  But be forewarned: you will probably get some grumblings from unhappy requesters. You will have followed the rules, so don't be alarmed, but do prepared to defend yourself.

I just want to add that if the "charm" was attached to the cover of the book and the removal of the "charm" caused damage to the cover, you could have receivers upset. In my opinion, it wouldn't be worth listing the book if the overall appearance of the book (cover) is damaged.

I have sent these books without the charms and without questions or complaints.

It's not required, but one helpful thing you can do is submit an edit to add a line at the end of the description.  It should say something like, "The magic charm that originally came with this book is non-Media material, and is not included in this listing."

To submit an edit, click on the title, then on the "more options" button.  Choose "edit book data" there. smiley

that's a good suggestion, Patty!  I'll keep that in mind.

Ok thanks everyone - much appreciated. I guess the best thing to do if someone requests one of the charm books is just to let them know before I ship that it is just the book without a charm to make sure they aren't disappointed when they get it. I suppose a run to a dollar store can get you a charm if you want to give it with the book - but the point of the books is that you don't need a magic charm because you carry the magic within you - LOL. Enjoy your trades!

This will make the book ineligible for media mail rate.  You would have to mail using a more expensive rate.

I think a charm that is attached to the book would be considered an incidental first class enclosure as it is "closely associated with but secondary to the host piece" as below from the instructions at the USPS site.

Incidental First-Class Mail Attachments and Enclosures

Incidental First-Class Mail matter may be enclosed in or attached to any Media Mail or Library Mail piece without payment of First-Class Mail postage. An incidental First-Class Mail attachment or enclosure must be matter that, if mailed separately, would require First-Class Mail postage, is closely associated with but secondary to the host piece, and is prepared so as not to interfere with postal processing. An incidental First-Class Mail attachment or enclosure may be a bill for the product or publication, a statement of account for past products or publications, or a personal message or greeting included with a product, publication, or parcel. Postage at the Media Mail or Library Mail price for the host piece is based on the combined weight of the host piece and the incidental First-Class Mail attachment or enclosure.
