When I logged into my account, I saw that I had 1 request.  At the same time, I noticed that I had 2 PMs.  My usual way of doing things is to look for the book to make sure I can find it and then to accept the request.  This time, thank goodness, I read my PMs first.  One of them was from the requester for the book asking for no smoking smell.  I should add that the actual request for the book did not have an RC concerning smoke smells.  I don't smoke, but that's not the point.  It kinda soured me on this particular swap, so I used the button saying that I couldn't mail the book.

My question is, did I do the right/correct thing? In the response box that popped up, I stated that requester sent a PM, not rc, about smoke smells.

I'd PM the requestor back to let her know she needs to add an RC if she doesn't want smoky smelling books.  A PM doesn't cut it.

You've lost your place in the FIFO system for your book.  It was removed from your bookshelf when you clicked "cannot mail".  Now you'll have to repost it and wait out all the other copies in the PBS system before your copy is requested again.

Exactly so...I would have PM'd her back and asked HER to cancel and let her know the proper way is to have an RC in place so that no one loses their spot in the queue when the request is declined for RCs.

Having a RC in a PM is really a nasty way to do it.  You cannot skip it.   Jennifer,  I'm sorry that you lost your place in FIFO.

Well, I agree with the other people that the requestor should have a RC ... .but if it were me I would have just sent the book.

It could just be, that the other member usually uses a RC and just forgot this once to put the RC on the book order. So, she quickly sent a PM once she realized.

Or, maybe not. Maybe she never uses a RC and always PMs.

If it was me I would have just mailed the book, though.

I'm sorry.  Putting a RC into a PM just seems rude to me.  I'm not sure I'd want to swap with that person.  They are asking for more than normal consideration without the protection of the RC blind.

I've heard of folks sending a PM to disregard the RC.  I can see that happening if a book was on auto request.  But adding one after the fact?  Shouldn't they cancel and re-request?

Is it possible that the request came from a new member who is unaware of the whole RC process?
