I'm not sure why PBS offers this as an option. Even if I put a book in my mailbox on Sunday does it really count as having been mailed?

Well, you could drop it in a blue box if you used PBS postage.  It's "mailed" even if it's not picked up.

It's probably because it make the programming a lot simpler to not have to ID postal holidays, or explain why 5 days is sometimes 6 (or 4, depending on how they did it).

I  can take it to the Post Office on Sunday and often do. As long as you've turned it over to the USPS (PO, bluebox, mail box) its mailed.

Even if the PO's closed on Sunday, there are still people there sorting mail to go out.  They don't pick up from blue boxes but I can drop a book in the dropbox in the PO lobby and it'll still get sorted to go out first thing Monday.

Once you put the book in a blue box, it's mailed.  Doesn't matter when exactly the USPS collects it from that box.

I've seen DC scans done on Sundays - even last Sunday, holiday weekend. They're there. It's possible.

my post office has an APC machine, so I can buy postage any day of the week (unless it is out of the stamps it prints on).  So I could easily go on a Sunday or even a holiday.

I've stuck books in my mail box on Sunday night and marked them mailed.  They're in there and ready to go.  Also you get 2 days afterwards. So if the mail by date falls on Sunday and you don't get in the mail on Sat or in a mail box on Sun-you have until Tues to mark it mailed.  So it doesn't get picked up until Mon you're ok.  If you use the printed postage though you might want to put Mondays date on it incase you get a picky postal employee.

Some PO's in the country are open for full service for a few hours.

I have a sub-station near my church that's open from 9 to 3 on Sunday.  I've mailed some stuff then.  In fact once I was late on a Saturday - they were closed and the guy that was there told me to come in on Sunday, no problem.

Wow!

Well, I count that as at least one new thing I've learned today!

Thanks, everyone!

Me too.  As a matter of fact, I never go when the PO is actually open anymore because it's a lot quicker to use the APC after hours.

Me three! Parking at our local PO is horrible. We get out for lunch early on Sundays and that's my favorite time to hit the APC because no one is there.

There are actually 2 POs near me that are open on Sundays, but lately I have been using the APC in the one near work. Much faster to go early in the morning when no one is in the parking lot yet.

A big 24 hour post office is across the street from my office.  For a while we were having lots of meetings on sundays and I'd often drop books off to be mailed.

Good to know. My post office here is closed on Sundays. I thought all post offices were.

I thought they were all closed on Sundays as well. My little rural PO isn't open at all on the weekends - not even for sorting.

I dropped a couple of books in a blue box on Sunday so they would go out in the early morning Monday mail.  As soon as the books leave my possession, I marked them Mailed.
