Malcolm Margolin (born October 27, 1940) is an independent publisher (founder and owner of Heyday Books) and an author with a special interest in memoirs and diaries, the Native-American ethnic groups of the U.S. state of California, and the geographical territory that California covers.

Born in Boston on October 27, 1940, he graduated in literature from Harvard in 1964 and moved to New York. In 1967 he and his wife rented a car and drove across the plains, the badlands, and the desert to Yosemite. He found the Yosemite area breathtakingly beautiful and fascinating. After this, and a float down the Merced River on an air mattress, the couple discovered Berkeley, Tilden Park, and the view across the San Francisco Bay. Returning to New York, they later moved out to California and settled in Berkeley in 1970. Margolin spent time working as a groundskeeper for the East Bay Parks Board.

Having come under the influence of Berkeley's Fred Cody, Margolin became interested in publishing. Margolin and Cody organized an event called the Inkslingers' Festival. In 1974 Margolin founded Heyday Books, devoted to (among other topics) a celebration of the history, literature and environment of California. Heyday's first book was one that Margolin authored, an intensive do-it-yourself manual on ecological land restoration. Heyday Books has grown into a solid and important Bay Area independent publishing firm.

In 2001, he co-founded Bay Nature, a nonprofit quarterly magazine dedicated to exploring the natural world of the San Francisco Bay Area. He is currently on the Bay Nature Institute's board of directors.
