First in this wonderful series about a group of eccentric English folks who meet in in pubs and solve murder mysteries and just gossip. Richard Jury, the main character is a handsome London detective and is more serious while other characters are more whimsical. A fun, well-written series.

This seems to be the first of her Richard Jury mysteries. It is full of English wit. A truly enjoyable read.

If you like English mystery but find Dame Christie a litte too dry then you need to read Martha Grimes. She does English mystery like no other. These are not 'cozy' mysteries particularly as she gets further along. Why these haven't been turned into a BBC series, I'll never know. This is Jury in his early days and is a little bit lighter. He meets most of the standard characters that will appear consistently throughout the books. Melrose Plant, his standard sidekick is wonderful. Be prepared, you are going to want to read all of them. They get better as you go along!
Great introduction to Richard Jury and Melrose plant,along with being a puzzling mystery. Colorful characters and quirky pubs draw the reader.

This is the beginning of the Richard Jury series of Martha Grimes Scotland Yard Superintindent. Thry all the books you begin to meet and enjoy all the characters in his life an join in the mysteries they all comtribute to solve. I have gone to a lot o trouble to colect each and everyone and have spent hours enjoying the whole tale.
I sincerely enjoyed the whole series of these books. Light mysteries but no gore. Each book is named after a particular pub in england and you have fun discovering the different characters that inhabit these pubs.

This is a new series for me. A patron of the library recommended Martha Grimes and her character Richard Jury. It is another historical mystery set in England. I have always been a fan of Agatha Christie and M. C. Beaton. I love mysteries set in England. I look forward to reading my way to the latest one.
