For fans of true British mysteries this book is a delight. Although it was written in 1929 there is still a contemporary feel to it. Tey twists the plot like a maze, always seeming to be at the solution before bringing in a new twist. This was also the book that introduced the detective Alan Grant, who appears in 5 subsequent novels.

This book is a fast read. The plot has alot of twists and turns and interesting characters. The only disappointment is in the carelessness of the inspector, who seems to be so trusting that he fails to follow up leads, and even lets his suspects get away from him by playing a lone hand. All-in-all, I would recommend this book for it's great settings and very mysterious murder.

If you haven't read Josephene Tey and you like mysteries like Agatha Christie this might be a good book for you. It is not her best but it is a good one.
