I love most of Hawthorne's books and this one is good as well. However, it is not one of his classics and that is becuase it is harder to remember the storyline behind it. I really do agree that it lays the characters and plot down for much later writers such as Fitzgerald. It's actually really cool to imagine an artist's life in the 1800s and it reminds us that artists have always lived outside of their time period - to a point where the life of an artist never really changes from one generation to the next.
