The Betrayal of Trust by Susan Hill. Book starts with a big storm, heavy rain. The next day a large bank of earth is discovered to have partially washed away. A skeleton is found. Body is that of a young girl who went missing about 14 years ago. In the ground nearby another skeleton is discovered. It looks like a cold case to solve. Setting is small town British.

This is a wide ranging plot. There is the cold case of murder but also an older woman who is dealing with the loss of motor neuron abilities and is contemplating assisted suicide while she can still do it. Her daughter is appalled. The detective who is working on the murder meets a woman by chance and falls immediately in love with her and she seems to feel the same but she is married and he is single divorced. A woman who has had a 30 year relationship with another woman has to deal with dementia in the other woman. There are several other threads woven into the story.

Read Death Rites by Alicia Gimenez-Bartlett. Police detective Petra Delicado is assigned to investigate a case of rape in Barcelona. Two more rapes are followed by murder, but there's very little in the way of graphic sex or violence. Much of the narrative is focused on how Petra deals with her first real case, her partner Sergeant Garzon, relationships with two ex-husbands, and some dying geraniums on her patio. The book is well written, the plot is just complicated enough, and it was an enjoyable read.
