This book really helped fill in the gaps about Masterharper Robinton from his birth til the events in the Dragonrider Trilogy. Seeing the politics of Pern from a non-dragonrider side of things was interesting too.
I have to say I cried at the end of this book. I began this series in junior high and the end of this book really hit me hard. Robinton is like a big brother, doting grandpa, first crush and great teacher all rolled into one person. I was overjoyed at seeing his whole story, but crushed when it came to an end.
McCaffrey does her usual wonderful story weaving - giving you insight and touching you with the character. She ties it in beautifully to prior works, but it can stand on it's own (another thing I LOVE about her books!)
This is a great book.
I saw a few Dragon adventure series on television, fell in love the dragonriders & dragons and wanted to spend time with them in books. McCaffrey's book is unbelievablely entertaining, enjoyable and loveable, if you like dragons! GREAT
