It seems that every time Cass Claxton and Susanne McCord meet, tempers clash and trouble ensues. When Cass refuses to take her to an aunt's house in Saint Louis, Susanne resorts to trickery. Claiming that Cass has ruined her, her father forces Cass to marry Susanne despite his protests of innocence. Furious, Cass takes her to Saint Louis and leaves, assuming she would quickly have the marriage annulled. Unfortunately, Susanne believed that he would be taking care of that.
Six year later, Cass and Susanne meet again. Susanne has taken charge of the nine children her aunt took care of in her orphanage. When her aunt dies and the house is taken away from her, Susanne finds that she needs the help of Cass. When the two discover that they are still married to each other, she agrees to sign the annulment papers in exchange for him to escort her and the children to Kansas, where her father lived. But what neither expects is that their journey might lead both to have a change of heart.
I loved reading this third book in the Men of the Saddle series. The Maverick is just as good a book as the previous two, which I also highly recommend. As usually, Lori Copeland has created an excellent novel with well developed characters and the right combination or romance and humor that you are sure to enjoy reading.
Really enjoyed this third book in the series - recommend you read them in order if you can - but it's not completely necessary
I like this series. Interesting time period.
Wow, this was a fun book! Susannah McCord is a stubborn, obstinate young woman who will do ANYTHING to have her way. This includes making up a ridiculous story just to entrap Cass Claxton into marrying her and taking her to St. Louis.
Cass literally dumps her on the lawn at her aunt's home and that is the last they see of each other for 6 more years. Then when Susanne realizes that Cass has in his possession something that she desperately needs. She is once again on the war path. Only this time, Cass is older and wiser and isn't about to let her trick him into anything ever again. Or is he?
Sparks fly and arguments ensue in this crazy story of two wills battling for their lives.
This book kept me turning the pages till the very last. I hope you will agree.
Cass Claxton is on his way to St. Louis when he is forced to marry spoiled Suzanne McCord when she tells her father that Cass has compromised her. Seeing no way out, he goes through the mockery of a wedding. She promises to have the marriage annulled once she gets to her aunt's home in St. Louis. Six years pass before they cross paths again. Neither have bothered to follow through to end the marriage. Now Suzanne needs to relocate back to Kansas with nine orphans. Once again she tricks Cass into safely getting them to their new home. She promises that she will give him the annulment when they reach their destination. Suzanne's constant lies don't bide well with Cass, but the children are finding a place in his heart. Will Suzanne be able to keep her promise to free Cass?
