A little disturbing, but also a little hilarious. The main character is well-formed, a sarcastic underachiever in a successful family. Read this if you enjoy snarky comments about suburbia, organized religion, or adults who should know better.

In this writer's first novel, the author starts out somewhere not far from Salinger's rye field, but ends up in a rare, marvelous place where only an extraordinary first novelist can take us.

This is an entertaining novel about a family transfixed by a series of mysterious events..an unforgettable emotional journey into America's heartland.

Very different but captivating story.

I absolutely loved this book....for the first 5/6th of the way. The hero, Monroe, was so likeable: lonely, naieve, sad, and searching. Utterly devoted to his sister. Powerless as he watched his family fall apart. The dialogue and the story were both completely believable. However, and very sad to say, the last portion of the book just derailed for me. I was hoping for a "miracle" as much as Monroe was....but...well, I wont spoil it. But such a disappointment in the end.
