Measuring Time by an hourglass Author:Adele Robertson, Kitty Crockett Measuring Time is a collection of the reflections of Adele "Kitty" Robertson. Each essay is a self-contained gem, calling up memories and thoughts, which speak to us all, and each was originally published in the Ipswich, Massachusetts weekly newspaper. The collection was self-published in 1981 by Kitty's daughter, Betsy Robertson Cramer. With no... more » promotion at all, that edition soon sold out. In October 1995, Metropolitan Books, Henry Holt, Inc., published Kitty's other book, The Orchard: A Memoir. It has been selected as a Book of the Month Club Alternate Selection. The Orchard has received raves around the U.S. and a paperback edition by Bantam Books is due in the spring of 1997. Here are selections from a few of the reviews: Booklist: "...Now, finally, her compelling memoir is ours to learn from and treasure." The Boston Globe: "...The house is still there, though diminished, the trees on the hillside now reduced to a few wormy survivors; ... The life -- smart, flawed, powerful -- is in the book." The Cleveland Plain Dealer: "...Robertson manages to convey the sense in which self-knowledge and peculiar joy can flow from hardship." Kirkus Reviews: "...intriguing account of one woman's daily victories and defeats...." Los Angeles Times: "...The book is nothing short of a hymn." New York Times: "...Robertson writes with evocative clarity, ...(her) crop has finally come in." The Washington Post, Jonathan Yardley: "...Robertson is a very good writer ... and The Orchard is a lovely book."« less
