I've been searching for info about whether children books that have sounds, thus little batteries, can be sent media mail.  Anyone have a reference?

I found a reference to batteries in the Domestic Mail Manual 601 Mailability. The section pertaining to small consumer batteries would be 601 10.20. If you look at the chart a little farther down, you'll see the batteries listed as 'mailable'. And the assumption would be that it would be mailable under all classes of mail. But you may have to check with your local PO.

Anybody have any specific experience mailing these as media mail? Any problems doing it?

Thanks Connie--I was remembering a discussion about the postability of books with batteries -- this was probably over a year ago -- and I couldn't remember how it came out.  I thought maybe media mail & batteries didn't mix, but it looks like maybe we're okay on that.

Woudn't "built in" batteries be considered an integral part of the book?

John, I was thinking that, too. Or fall under the exception for items "closely related", even.

I would think that batteries in this type of book would be integral to the book only if it doesn't have words.

Unlike a CD with data pertaining to a specific book, a battery is a battery is a battery.  A book would be unpostable without the CD because the CD cannot be replaced with another that you can pick up at the store.  That CD is only useful with that book.

A battery on the other hand, doesn't care if it's in a book or not.  And it can be replaced with another when it wears out because it doesn't contain information that can be used only with that book.

That being said, I would think you could post the book on your bookshelf with no problem.  And if the battery wears out, PM the requestor to let them know they will need to get a new battery.

Ange, the OP wasn't asking about posting the book but rather mailing it...just FYI

I realized that.  I was commenting on the two posts just before mine wondering if the batteries were essential to the book.
