I am out of printer ink and am writing my labels by hand for the moment.  I've also recently become interested in using stamps and mailing books from my house instead of going to the post office.

Are there any weird rules for handwriting the "media mail" label?  Like, does it have to be in red ink?  This feels like a silly question, but I want to make sure I do it right!

No, it doesn't need to be red, as many people print in B&W. Just needs to be clear and easy to see/read when viewing the address and postage. I recently had to change a First Class wrapper to MM so I used a file label sticker to cover the FC and wrote Media Mail in block caps with a black sharpie.

When I print labels in B&W, my PO always stamps the package with 'media mail' in RED so guess they prefer it that way.

Thanks guys :)

I think I will write it in red to be on the safe side.  That way it will stand out from the address as well.

If the book you are mailing weighs more than 13 oz you can't put stamps on it and mail it from your home mailbox. Any stamped packages over 13 oz must  be mailed at the post office. If you printed the label with the postage paid, then it is ok to mail from your home mailbox.

You can also buy stamps at the APC machine, as they are trackable, and use those to mail books of any weight from your house. I keep a stash of $2.69 stamps in my wallet.

When I mail media mail I do not do write "media mail" on the package. I tape the the electronic label to the package and it's good to go.

I think it's a good idea to write  "media mail" in red for handwritten addresses.
