First written in 1949, translated from the French in 1966. When I read it (about 1990), the first chapter was the most interesting and enlightening chunk of written material that I have read, contrasting highland and lowland people, among other things. However, I never got beyond chapter 2 or 3. I promise to read the whole thing some day, check back with me in 2026 or so.
You should have a really really detailed map or gazeteer when you read this, because there's a lot of very obscure and obsolete names in the Mediterranean.
