I am reall y angry about this, I bought this book, Healing with the Angels by Doreen Virtue, waited and waited for the member to reply, in The meantime the same book came through just behind this one, one I could have bought had I known this member was going to drop the ball on mine. So now it was taken out of my requested books and I am kinda soured about the whole thing :( Why would a member not respond? At least even to cancel.

Are you saying you posted that book or you requested that book from someone else?

Why would a member not respond?

People are busy, go on vacation, miss email notifications, decide this site's not for them...

Annoying, but if the book was posted twice since you're requested it, chances are it will be posted again soon.  Just don't cancel the request because when you request it again, your request will go back to the same member (the site is set up on the first in, first out method). If you let the order time out (members have 5 days to respond) you'll help weed out inactive members.

Edited to add - If I'm understanding you correctly and it was cancelled by the system because the member didn't respond, check your wishlist. It should have automatically been moved there so you'll be offered the book the next time it's posted (or in whatever position you are in the wishlist).

Welcome to PBS Karen.  Frustrating to have a transaction time-out, but do check your wishlist.  The PBS system probably placed you back on the wishlist in your former position (usually #1).  The next copy posted into the system will be offered to you.

The PBS system hasn't failed you. surprise   When the transaction timed-out, the book was removed from the bookshelf of the non-responsive sender/member.  In addition, if this member fumbles a couple more transactions the system will hold or suspend their account.

ETA - And as annoying as we may find a timed-out transaction, sometimes members have RL dificulties and unforseen events arise in their lives.  Not only busy schedules, but sometimes sudden illness, family matters, or even hospitalization (away from internet access).  Even storms and severe weather can interrupt the flow of information, PBS transactions, and mail service.

Someday life will get in the way and YOU'LL "drop the ball". Then you'll understand.

It happens to most people eventually.

Don't worry, there are lots and lots of great trades out there. cool

I thought about that after I posted ...Should'nt have assumed the worst about that member... Just negative thinking, I'm new to paperbackswap and  really wanted that book. I am next in line to get it if it's reposted... How does that work?  They send you an email or something?

How do you know that another copy of the book was posted while you were waiting?   When I look at the wait list for that book for paperback, CD and cassette, it says that no books have been posted in the last week.    Are you referring to your place in line (perhaps #2 instead of #1) and think that someone else jumped ahead of you?  I'm just saying, how do you know while you were waiting that someone else posted that book and that another person got it?

Karen, normally if a wishlisted book is posted by another member, you'll receive an email that the book is available. You'll have 2 days to accept the offer. Another option, if you're sure you want the book, is to put that book on autorequest on your wishlist and the system will automatically order it for you when it's offered to you.

Karen -

It takes a while to get used to the rhythms of Paperback Swap. There are lots of great books here, and I really enjoy participating, but when I first started, I found it stressful to deal with the ups and downs, especially when I was excited about a particular book. We're used to quick online shipping and being able to track the location of a package, but that isn't consistently the case here. You'll learn that if you really want a book quickly, you should probably head to your library or bookstore, or order online.

There's unfortunately no way to predict, when we request a book, whether it will arrive in four days (unusual but possible), in two weeks, or not at all (sad but possible). But the rhythms work, in the long run. Books do arrive. Members do fulfill their obligations (or if they don't, we generally don't end up out the credit).

Enjoy the books you will receive - even if they don't arrive quite when you want them to. :)
