Again, the sender is being told by their post office "there is no longer any media mail rate to your (my) location" so they were being charged $7 to ship.

What's going on? Does this have to do with the new rates?

Anybody heard about this or have been told this by your post office? I'm stunned. I live in central Denver in a condo and receiving books from any and all locations has never been a problem (although I've only been doing this for about 2 months). Could this just be a screw up by that particular post office or is this a real thing?

Yikes.

i'm pretty sure MM is available to all US locations.  Not to American Samoa, though.  Tried that once.  what a nightmare.

Not to Denver? Maybe that employee was smoking something. We still have media mail to remote sites in Alaska (most of state has no roads) but we may be losing ALL mail service soon.

Unfortunately Michelle, some PO's take advantage that way.  Call and talk to the Postmaster and consider filing a complaint online with USPS.com

Just a reminder, and may not pertain directly to you, but you must specifically ask for Media Mail in order to get that rate. Even is you say you are mailing a book, you MUST ask for Media Mail. Also, "Media Mail" should be printed on the address label or package.

And you can't reuse Priority Mailers to mail anything other than priority mail. Even if you turn it inside out or cut it up or something.  So if you used something that was intended for Priority Mail and the postal clerk noticed, that could explain the charge.

Even using the priority mail labels or tape will cause the staff to charge the higher price.  They are required to.

"Even if you turn it inside out or cut it up or something."

I've received packages from one particular vendor on Amazon who used cut up Priority boxes as packing material. That's kinda ballsy.

I was told today that there was an update to the USPS system and it was even more difficult for them to select media mail. Their system does not want to scan the DC .  their system automatically picked first class and there was about 5 more steps she had to take to get it to scan my DC and not charge me extra.  I thought updates would improve things not make it more difficult.  Gotta love technology.

Just had PO charge me the higher first class rate for a book marked media mail-- 2nd time in recent months. One of the regular clerks who takes my almost weekly book packages weighed it and said "It's cheaper first class."  So I said 'ok', but we'll have to cover up the words "media mail" in red on the package, which she did.  Imagine my surprise when I got home to put the receipt with my other postage receipts awaiting delivery to find they charged me $3.40 for first class for a normal size paperback. The much heavier brand new book I mailed at the same time went for $2.69 via media mail.
