I have a copy of "Indelible" by Karin Slaughter (paperback) which is on wishlists but I must have a different ISBN number so it hasn't been requested. Why does someone just want a certain ISBN number? Are the books different? Thanks for any info. I am new and still learning. :-)   Phyllis

Phyllis,

The hardcover, paperback and audio versions of the books usually have different ISBNs. Subsequent editions also have their own ISBN numbers. The paperback editions usually come out a few weeks after the HCs so those who cannot wait, usually opt for those. HCs are also preferred by those building their personal libraries while some are looking for PB versions only. Shipping cost is another factor when choosing betwen HC and PB. Some prefer audio books so they usually have the audio books wishlisted.

It is all subjective and a matter of personal preference. :) Members usually have the HC and the PB versions on their wishlist, hoping one or the other will become available. If it is a book they simply want to read, usually the HC vs PB book type does not matter.

In most instances, there is no difference in the books. However, there are always abridged versions, versions adapted for young adults, children's editions, etc. which can be very different from the original. Each of these have eir own ISBN.

Hope that helps.

FYI - when a wishlistbook with different ISBN is listed, an e-mail is supposed to go out to the member who has it wishlisted so that they can choose to opt for that book instead. There seems to be some controversy about whether this happens or not but I have received such a notification in the past so I guess it works - at least some of the time. :)
