I was considering signing up for this.  What is your opinion of this option?  TIA

I personally love it. I swap anywhere from 2 books to 10 books, etc...at a time for no credits. Then the credits that I accumulate from FIFO requests have been going towards wish list books, games and donating to the club. If you don't see something on someones shelf that you want to swap for then decline the offer. Don't feel like you have to accept just because someone wants to swap with you. Sometimes you may want 6 and they may want 4 so you just have to pick two to delete to make it even. One time I wanted 7 and the other person only wanted two but still sent the 7 to me just to get rid of them. I love it.

I have only been a member of box-o-books for about a month and I find it very interesting.

Best thing: several books on my shelf (items in a series) that would have been on my shelf for years in FIFO are out the door.  YEAH!

Interesting:  In looking at another's shelf, I end up getting books I probably would not have ordered FIFO.  (Sometimes it's a reminder - like 'oh, yeah, I have never read Tom Wolf's 'The Right Stuff' and always wanted to get around to it).  Often though, I take a chance on a book that looks somewhat interesting to even out the swap.  I probably would not have found and/or ordered it from FIFO.  And here is where I have found some amazing gems.

Not so good thing:  There is no time limit for sending the books and I'm not sure if PBS will get involved in a box-o-books swap gone bad.

I'm very happy I joined box-o-books.  It is a different way to find books, and to get movement off my physical book shelves here in my house.  I figure the clunker book or two I end up with can always be reposted here and since most of the box-o-books are form more than one book, I don't really lose - even in terms of postage.

Just remember it is OK to decline an offer.  I have declined a few, and been declined a time or two - and it is all very amiable.

I don't think box-o-books if for everyone.  But it has worked out very well for me thus far.

Carrie--

If you're interested in a particular author or genre, you might try searching the Box of Books area to see what's available, to give you an idea of what you might be able to swap for (say, you really want a bunch of sci-fi or books by XYZ author).

Be advised, though, when you first join, you're fresh meat -- you'll be posted on the list of "new boxers" and you may get a flood of offers, just like when you joined PBS.  You can always put your "Boxing" on hold, if you want, while still keeping your regular bookshelf and credit swaps available.

Also, with only 29 books on your shelf, you might have a hard time making deals (or maybe you have a stash of books unposted under your desk, I dunno). :-)

Just some random thoughts.  I'm a new boxer myself, but I've found it to be an interesting experience.

Cheers,

Catt

I just have lots by the same authors I am hoping to get rid of.

Do you have to pay the $8 for the whole year at once?  I am just concerned I will pay it and not get rid of these books, KWIM?

I do have about 10 hardbacks to put on my shelf yet.

I am more concerned about not getting rid of MY books...

You have a small shelf so you might only be able to do a couple of BOBs before you have no shelf left.  My bob is on hold right now because my TBR is massive and the last time I came off hold my shelf was wiped out.

Just keep in mind that most of hte BOB offers you get will have pretty much the same type of books on their shelf. So if you didn't read those books be prepared to turn down some BOB offers.  Don't feel like you ahve to accept every BOB offer. If they don't have any books you want then just politely decline.

Carrie--

Unfortunately, there are lots of copies of titles by those same authors posted in the system (you might search the BoB area for them), so I wouldn't join BoB solely for the purpose of getting rid of them.

Yes, you do pay the $8 at once.

Catt

I looked at your shelf, Carrie, and I would say unless you are planning to add a lot more/different books, I would not bother. If I received an offer from you, for example, I would decline as there's nothing on your shelf I want.

I was one of the beta-testers for BoB and got a free six-month trial from PBS but after about 2 months I put it on hold because I was constantly getting offers from folks with small shelves that only had uber-popular books that had hundreds of copies in the system. And a lot of times those folks wanted 10 of my books, and I couldn't even find one of theirs I wanted! I got tired of saying "no thanks" so just held the BoB and then never renewed. I did do a few trades, but it was more to test the system out--most of the books I chose from people in BoBs I ended up not even reading and re-listing on my shelf a few months or years later unread. Any book I *really* want is on my wishlist or reminder list and I'm willing to pay a credit for it.

BoB is definitely not for everyone.

I never have more than 20-30 books posted and they are usually heavily posted romance/mysteries-mostly romance nowadays.  I still was able to trade them all on BOB deals.  That's why I had to go on hold because I sent pretty much all of them out on BOB deals and haven't read the ones I got in return yet. The TBR is out of control or I'd unhold BOB again.  I will unhold it when I get some more books read and posted.  Usually when you first join or renew you get a lot of BOB offers at once.

The key is if you like the books you ahve posted. If they are books you picked up cheap just to scock yourshelf then no I wouldn't join BOB. Because most of your BOB offers will be from people with similar books.  But if you read those and enjoyed them then go ahead an join and see if you can trade them for similar books.

Carrie I have had great experience with BOB. It works very well when you re looking for a series. I was looking for the entire series of Sue Grafton books and I was able to find them all through Box of Books. I agree with the others. You need to have lots of books on your bookshelf and you need a variety. I won't exchange with someone that has less than 20 that are all on one subject. I've learned that people want travel books, cookbooks, nonfiction books, etc. So, you need a healthy bookshelf with a variety. I also agree with the others that there is no time limit in mailing the books. Even though I try to mail books within 3 days, the person you are exchanging with might not mail their books for a week or so. The box of books is also a good way to increase your bookshelf. You get rid of books on your bookshelf that you have had for awhile and then you receive new books to put on your bookshelf.

I think I am going to pass for now.  If some of my deals go thru, I will only have my Sue Graftons left on my BS.  I will have more of those to post soon because a friend is returning ones she had borrowed =)
