The excess posting and bumping has been getting a little out of hand the last week. I know it is the holidays and traffic in the Bazaar is a little heavier so things go off the front page faster and people have more deals to offer; but everyone ignoring the rules just makes it that much worse. All of the rules of the Bazaar are in the red sticky at the top of the Forum titled "How to use this forum..." and following is the Help Center document on posting and bumping. Please be kind to your fellow Bazaar users, they are also the people who will take you up on your offers.

Why are there rules on how many topics you can start (and 'bump') in the Book Bazaar?

The rules in the Book Bazaar include limits on both

  • New topics - each member may create up to two topics each day. Of any kind. It does not matter what the topic is about. Only two new Book Bazaar topics each day, per person.

  • 'Bumping' a topic - 'Bumping' means to Post a new post in a topic for the purposes of bringing the topic to the top of the forum list ( = the "front page" of the Bazaar). Each member may 'bump' a total of twice a day. The 'bumps' may not be applied to the same topic.

Please note that Posting in your own topic may be interpreted as a 'bump' in some circumstances - to avoid this, you should generally stick to

    • Editing the original post in a topic if you need to change a book list or a deal, or add information - editing the OP will not bump the topic
    • Responding to other members in PMs (if other members post in the topic about the deals they want, for example) and by posting in the topic

Note that if you create two topics on Monday, two on Tuesday and two on Wednesday that means you would have 6 active topics in the Bazaar by Wednesday (the earlier ones will have fallen off the front page). If you want to bump any of your topics, you have to choose two. You may not bump more than twice per day. It does not matter how many active topics you have.

These limits are designed to allow everyone fair access to have a topic on the "front page" of the Book Bazaar, which (obviously) gets the most views.

The reasoning for this: the topics that appear on the front page of the Book Bazaar fall into the following categories:

  1. Brand new topics (just created)
  2. Topics that have been "bumped" - this is limited to once per day, so this effect is brief
  3. Topics that other members are interested in, and are posting in.

That is why we have placed limits on #1 and #2, so that no one can keep creating new topics and/or bumping their old topics to crowd others out, and so that #3 prevails - the result is that general member interest drives what appears on the front page of the Bazaar.

We hope this helps you understand why we have these rules for the Bazaar. Happy swapping!

"Rules.....I don't need no Stinkin Rules!"

Actually for the past week or so I've noticed that too and a number of the violators have been around awhile and should know better.

No names, but y'all know who you are. So stop it or you go on the Naughty List!

My personal solution is that I don't order any books from the violators.

Thanks for the reminder. Personally, I think if someone has to keep bumping, they ought to 'take the hint.'

Reminder is also needed to mark your post finished/gone/ended whatever, once it's no longer available. I wasted some time (day and a half) with one offer for credits no longer really available (waiting for payment from someone else but not noted in post) and in the process lost out on some other offers that had been available when I was tied up with the "non" offer.

I agree with you, Melanie.  It's so easy to go back and edit a post rather than keep making new ones. And Rob is right, too, some of the biggest offenders have been PBS members long enough to know better.

Thanks for the reminder!!

Just to make sure I understand the rules:

I just created a thread where I am looking for a deal. Once that thread falls off the first page, I am not allowed to bump my thread if noone responds to it, unless someone says something in my thread that I can respond to? Do I understand that correctly?

You can bump twice a day per the rules.  What was going on that led to this post is people were putting up 5 threads and bumping them before they even got to the bottom of the page.

Oh ok, I see. Well I don't think I will be a rule breaker here as I very rarily coming in here, unless I am looking for deals or credits to buy. :-) Thanks for helping me out Patti.

Just want to clarify that you can bump up to 2 threads once per day. You are not supposed to use your 2 bumps on the same topic (thread). Most of the time people don't care, its when it gets out of hand and someone is bumping repeatedly and there a a few people with masses of posts on the main page. Its all about being fair to the other users. If you have one post that you are looking for something, most people won't look at it as being unfair to other Bazaar users when you bump it unless you get totally crazy.

There are people who just don't realize the rules for the Bazaar are up there. Sadly for the people doing multiple threads, as Rob points out, when they post the many many threads they actually do exactly the opposite of what they wanted and they get people to not want to deal with them instead of getting more exposure.

:edit to add a thank you to those people who did adapt their posting after being PMed about the rule. I think most people just see other people doing it and think its ok because others are doing it.
