Hi everyone! I'm waiting for a few books to come in the mail, but I have Memoirs of a Geisha on my shelf which I haven't read yet.

Have you read it? What do you think?

I liked it. I thought it was a fascinating glimpse into a world that I would normally never know.

I saw the movie first and loved it!! Then I read the book and it explained so much more than the movie ever could about the culture and whatnot.  Even so, I still love both the movie and the book.

I loved the book.  It was insightful and very moving.  I had no idea what the world of Geisha's was like until I read this.

I thought it was a wonderful book. I was disappointed in the movie but that is typical after read the book. I couldn't put it down once I started it. It was quite the trip into the world. So interesting!!

Loved it.  I'm glad I read it before I saw the movie.  It explained so much of the world of a geisha.

Katie, thanks for your post!  I also have the book on my shelf, but it keeps getting pushed aside in favor of others that I have been waiting to read.  Now I want to leave work and go home and start reading it.  However, (sigh) I guess I will have to wait until after 4:00 p.m. when I leave the office.

I read the book...as far as the story itself and the characters...I thought it was a bit meh.  But, the look into the world of a geisha was fascinating.  Definately worth reading for that.

I thought it dragged a bit at the end. However, like others have said, it was a fascinating look into the culture of Geishas.

I also thought the movie was very well done and one of the few that touched the quality of the book.

Wasn't sure if I'd like it- but I loved it!  I refuse to see the movie because I know it won't do the book justice.  I want to keep my own images and have all the detail.  You should just read a few chapters and see for yourself!

I loved it.  I never knew anything about geisha's (that includes pronouncing it properly).

ok I'll be the minority here...thought the book was ok but the movie was absolutely horrid.  That scene where she does her "coming out" dance, complete with mood lighting, fake snow, techno music, yeah, sure that's realistic...

I loved the book, and actually started reading about geishas after. The selling of virginity is really false, and was only done by prositutes and not actual geisha so it diminished some of my love for the book. It is good fiction, but don't take it at face value.
