The Sacrament Of Extreme Unction. CCCXV. iJEHSRlF the visible operations of the Church, some are sacraments, as Baptism; others, as Exorcism, are sacra- mentals. Between these two, a Sacrament and a Sacramental, there is this difference. That action of the Church is called a Sacrament which attains to the effect principally intended in the administration of the Sacraments ; while that action is called a Sacramental, which, although it does not attain to that effect, is yet in a way ordained in order to that principal action. Now the effect intended in the administration of the Sacraments is the healing of the disease of sin. But Extreme Unction, as appears from the words of S. James, is ordained to produce this effect; and, moreover, is not ordained in order to, or annexed to any other Sacrament, and so is not merely a Sacramental, but itself a Sacrament. CCCXVI. This Sacrament immediately disposes a man to glory, being given to those who are departing from the body. Now, under the old law the estate of glory had not yet arrived, for as S. Paul says, the law led to nothing perfect, and so this Sacrament was not therein prefigured by any figure of the same genus corresponding thereto, although it was, in a way, by certain remote figures, to wit, by the various healings read of in the Old Testament.
