The Memory Keeper's Daughter - Audio CD - Abridged Author:Kim Edwards, Martha Plimpton (Narrator) On a winter night in 1964, Dr. David Henry is forced by a blizzard to deliver his own twins. His son, born first, is perfectly healthy. Yet when his daughter is born, he sees immediately that she has Down's Syndrome. Rationalizing it as a need to protect Norah, his wife, he makes a split-second decision that will alter all of their lives for... more »ever. He asks his nurse to take the baby away to an institution and never to reveal the secret.
But Caroline, the nurse, cannot leave the infant. Instead, she disappears into another city to raise the child herself. So begins this beautifully told story that unfolds over a quarter of a century in which these two families, ignorant of each other, are yet bound by the fateful decision made that long-ago winter night.
A brilliantly crafted, stunning debut, The Memory Keeper's Daughter explores the way life takes unexpected turns, and how the mysterious ties that hold a family together help us survive the heartache that occurs when long-buried secrets burst into the open.

This is possibly one of *the* worst books I have ever read. Great premise - terrible storyline and execution. Not only is the writing marginal, but the author re-uses the same hokey imagery over and over "quicksilver child", "thin hair, held back with barettes". There is little redeeming about the characters, and the subplots are simply unbelievable. Don't waste a credit or your time on this one. If I were the publisher, I'd be embarrassed.
Sorry. This one was a disappointment. I quickly tired of characters who made bad decisions and then proceeded to compound the mistakes.
Currently 2/5 Stars.

Adequate. I don't think I would have finished this book if I didn't have the audio version. As it was, I'm not convinced it wasn't a waste of time. Lots of potential in the story, but I feel like the author just didn't try hard enough.

This is an awesome story, tugs at your heart. It was interesting to see how lives had changed over almost a decade from one decision made under emotional stress. Well written story, and well read by Martha Plimpton.
