Delilah grew up in a loving home. She went off to college and ended up coming back home. She works at the local bank, is dating a good guy, and is generally happy and living her life. In this world, something happened called "The Reaping" where human children died and in some cases, all the children in a family. It was later determined to be the fault of cryptids, a group that encompases anything "other." Think all types of fae, supernaturals like werewolves and other shifters, mermaids, etc. Prior to this event, they lived openly and had rights. After this event they had none and lost whatever job/property/money/etc they had. Now cryptids are either research subjects , they are part of the various Menagerie's traveling in the US (think circus), or they become part of private collections.
It is while visiting the Menagerie with her boyfriend, her best friend, and her boyfriend, that she witnesses a 13 year girl being tortured. But it's okay because that 13 year old is also a werewolf. Delilah undergoes a change and attacks the torturer. She is then jailed and sold to the Menagerie; job, home, savings are forfeited because she is Other.
What follows are Delilah's discoveries about herself and what her purpose is and forging to new friendships and making new allies. I was curious about Gallagher and his motives. I did like the direction this took. I did like the last couple of chapters were rushed and would have liked more there. It also appears that the enslavement of cryptids was just a US thing; Mexico was apparently a safe place to be for cryptids.
No cliffhanger.
