Meredith F. Small was born November 20, 1950, in Saint Lewis, Missouri. Her father worked for General Electric, and she moved around more often than was comfortable. As a college student, she transferred five times due to relocation. She majored in music until she realized, in her junior year, that that wasn't where her passion lay. She happened to take an anthropology coarse soon after, and immediately fell in love with the interesting studies of different cultures. She quickly changed her major. It was around this time that she also developed an interest in primatology. It was on this subject that she wrote her dissertation. At the age of 38 she discovered for the first time that she could write, and applied her newly found skill to her interest in culture, human evolution, and biology. To this day, she is an anthropologist—primatologist and scientist journalist. She has written six books on the anthropology of human mating, mental illness, and child-rearing across cultures.
