I'm about a third of the way through "Tularosa" and I'm liking it okay. I LOVE Santa Fe and northern New Mexico so that's what initially drew me to this series. The story is moving along pretty well but I think the author is a little thin on character development. Has anyone else read these books? Any thoughts? Do you recommend the rest of the series?

I like them quite a bit. I'd call them police procedurals, if I had to slot them into a mystery genre. I don't read too many in that category but I have been following these  - I think McGarrity does a great job giving you a sense of place and the stories are always interesting. You're not going to get a lot of rich character development from the series, but McGarrity does develop Kerney more as it goes on. He's tried to do a bit more with other characters in the last couple books, maybe not totally successful, but they're good stories nonetheless.

Thanks, Cyndi! That's about what I was expecting and exactly what I was looking for. It's enough to keep me going. :)

Yes!  They do get better as you go on ~ I actually have #1 - #7 on my bookshelf (in pb, read once).  Anyway, I have the next 3 or 4 on my TBI list!  I have found recently that I love reading the series all together........

Well, I'm more than halfway through "Tularosa" and I'm really enjoying it so I think I'll hang out with Mr McGarrity for a while. Thanks for the recs!

I finished "Tularosa". I couldn't help thinking that Mr McGarrity was fixing to win big on some bets with some college buddies or something. He really piled A LOT into that first book. I just finished the second book in the series, "Mexican Hat" and really enjoyed it. The author has settled down a bit and found his groove. "Mexican Hat" is a much more "finished" novel than the first one and Kerney's character is quite a bit more developed. I'm glad I hung in there and I'm looking forward to starting the third book soon!

Have read them all and agree that the characters are more developed as the series goes on - just read on his website that he has a new one going to the publisher this month.  So keep on reading!!
