The last of the Donovan Family Saga. I loved that series of books, which in addition to telling of the loves of the very likeable Donovan clan, the reader also learns of the gem trade and jewelery business all set in exotic locales.

I'm not sure why I keep reading Lowell books. They frequently leave me wanting more, and not in a good way. More natural dialogue would be a good start. The Donovans are tremendously appealing characters, and I'd like to read really good books about them. I'll put this one a notch above Jade Island, just on the merits that Owen Walker is a good ol' southern boy (sort of). :-)

Book 4 of the Donovan series - A great ending to the series, but there are still 2 more brothers that could be written about....maybe if we all asked Ms. Lowell (penname) to finish the series we would be so lucky as to have more Donovan books :)

One of my favorite Elizabeth Lowell books. The details and descriptions she uses with the setting and characters really up you right into the story quickly. Great story line that makes magic happen.

A close-knit family in the jewelry business, a clan of Southern aristocrats descended from smugglers, the FBI and a Russian assassin clash in this juicy final episode in Lowell's Donovan series (Pearl Cove, etc.). When Seattle-based jewelry designer Faith Donovan is commissioned by Davis MontegeauAher best friend Mel's future father-in-lawAto design a necklace using 13 priceless rubies of uncertain origin, she becomes the target of an assassin trying to recover jewels stolen from the fabled Hermitage in Leningrad. To protect Faith, her brothers assign Owen Walker, dashing troubleshooter and gem expert, to accompany her and the necklace to a jewelry show in Savannah and then on to the wedding on Hilton Head Island. From the moment Faith and Walker start out, the fate of the rubies becomes entwined with their budding romance. As Faith and Walker learn when they come to stay at Ruby Bayou, the Montegeau family's crumbling old plantation on Hilton Head, the alcoholic Davis has mortgaged the place to keep a failed land deal afloat, and as a result he's now mixed up with a New Jersey crime family. Davis's sister, Tiga, hasn't been right in the head for years, ever since her father, who had forced her into incest, was blasted with a shotgun by parties unknown. That same night, the Blessing Chest, filled with all the family gems, disappeared, and only Tiga knows where it might be. Though constantly shifting points of view and a few gratuitous sex scenesAeven by genre standardsAdetract from the tale, Lowell wraps things up neatly as all parties converge on the Bayou, and Faith and Walker contrive to save the day

Faith Donovan is famous for crafting exquisite jewelry studded with fabulous gems. But the dangerous task of acquiring the rare rubies she needs for her art has taught Faith to be wary of anyone outside her own family--sepecially someone like Owen Walker, an adventurer with an intimate knowledge of the ruby trade and man's murderous greed. But now necessity has thrown them together, as they venture into the shadowy world of the wealthy and mysterious Montegeaus in search of quality stones. More on the cover.... I enjoyed reading this book and the twists in the story line.

This is a combined romance/mystery/thriller, well-crafted by an excellent writer.

From back cover: Faith Donovan is famous for crafting exquisite jewelry--and the dangerous task of acquiring rare and fabulous gems has taught her to be wary of anyone outside her own family. But now necessity has thrown her together with Owen Walker--an adventurer with an intimate knowledge of the ruby trade--as they venture into the shadowy world of the wealthy and mysterious Montegeaus.
A powerful Georgia clan descended from pirates, the Montegeaus are said to possess a staggering fortune in gems, hidden for generations in the legendary Blessing Chest. But a terrifying web of corruption and betrayal spreads out from the Montegeaus past and present. And suddenly Faith and Walker--two outsiders who have learned too much--are standing in the way of those who would kill for the Blessing Chest's contents.

Preferred the other Donovan novels to this one. I never find Lowell's mysteries to be very mysterious. She does better when she concentrates on romance, which she doesn't do much of here.

I loved this book! I actually read this Donovan book out of sequence but I don't think it matters. Highly recommend Midnight....to others. It was a page turner with a little bit of romance built in. Ms. Lowell has a unique writing style and I have enjoyed all of her books. If you like Romance Mystery this is another author to add to your "to read" list.
