Morgan was raised in Tulsa, Oklahoma. At age 13, he interned with the National Weather Service Tulsa Forecast Office. In 1985, Morgan got his first television meteorology job at NBC affiliate KJRH in Tulsa. In 1988, Morgan became the evening meteorologist for KOCO-TV, the ABC affiliate in Oklahoma City and worked there until 1992, before moving to KFOR-TV in 1993.

Morgan was presented with the Humanitarian Award by former Oklahoma Governor Frank Keating for KFOR's coverage of the 1999 Oklahoma tornado outbreak on May 3, 1999. In eight out of nine years since 2000 (seven of those years consecutive), Morgan has received the Oklahoma Association of Broadcasters award for state's Best 10PM weathercast. Mike has also been honored the Radio Television News Directors' Association Award and has won two and been nominated for seven Regional Emmy Awards.
