He might like James H. Cobb's series of four, starting with Chosers of the Slain. The others are Sea Fighter, Sea Strike, and Target Lock.

James Webb's novels are good:

Fields of Fire
A Sense of Honor
A Country Such as This
Something to Die For

Military memoirs:

With the Old Breed by E.B. Sledge a U.S. Marine's memoirs on the battles of Okinawa and Peleliu.
Goodbye, Darkness: A Memoir of the Pacific War by William Manchester

W.E.B. Griffin has a series about the Marines, I haven't read them myself but my mom loves them.

If he would be interested in trench warfare during WW1, All Quiet on the Western Front by Remarque is superb.
