Oh God, where to start with this book?! How can I word this without sounding too mean-after all, I am all for a person following their dreams...but this book is just too PAINFUL to read and I have to be honest about how bad this book really is!
I had originally wrote a review of this book after many failed attempts at reading it through, but I deleted it because I wanted to give Mr. Bittinger a fair chance in hopes that this book got better....well, it didn't.
My original review highlighted my dislikes about this book and upon reading more of the book, (I am now about 40 pages from the end...and I JUST can't finish it!!!) I have exactly the same opinion I had towards the beginning of the book. The only thing that has changed, is now instead of there being two very annoying characters in the book (Storm and Vanessa), there are three (the vet, Khris).
Here are my annoyances about this book...
1.) The characters are not only completely unbelievable, they are soooo annoying. The teasing that goes on between these three characters is, for lack of a better term, incessant. This is a problem for many reasons...one being, this is supposed to be a horror/thriller. This much humor (believe me, it `aint at all funny!) takes away from the atmosphere of the book. After all, how is the reader supposed to be scared with a constant comedy act being played out by Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dumber? Not only this, but it completely annoys the reader. We bought this book with the idea that we were purchasing a scary horror novel, not some book full of lame dialogue by characters that seem completely flat. These characters are just not believable. I mean, who sits around all day talking about how they are going to decorate their new mansion? I mean...come on? Over half of this book is documenting what kind of color scheme will match the previous décor already in the house from a hundred years ago. B-O-R-E-I-N-G!
2.) And then there's the cat, Shadow. AHHHHH!!!!!!!!! What man talks to a cat, rubs a cat, sleeps with a cat and takes it everywhere with him on his shoulders? I'd say there is something else goin' on between this man and his cat...if ya know what I mean. The other half of this book describes the vet checkups, the sneezing and the other very mundane daily traits of a cat's day. I am not joking. This book is THAT silly.
3.) Is this book scary? Not in the least...like I said, this book is made up of Storm moving into an old family mansion, redecorating it, making a few very irritating friends and fondling his cat. That's all. Sure there a few supernatural moments sprinkled in, like when he found the book in the wall, children playing hide and seek, and an old woman peering out a window...but those times are few and far in between, and NONE of these moments are frightening. All these moments do, is irritate the reader further into realizing that this is not the book that we thought it was.
I just really want people to be aware of what they are buying. This book is not good, and it is not horror. I bought this blindly, not knowing that this was basically a home improvement project between a man and his annoying friends...and oh yeah...his "special" friend, his cat, Shadow.
I don't understand how some books can be allowed to be published; if you want some really great horror books to read about haunted houses and the occult, try reading Jonathan Aycliffe...he is not only super scary, but his books are smart and his characters believable! Good luck horror lovers!
