The Mirror Prince
Author: Violette Malan
Max Ravenhill was perfectly happy with his life as a history professor until he met Cassandra. Told that he was more than a thousand years old and had known Cassandra and her fellow Wardens all that time, that his life as Max was pure fiction implanted in his mind, and that he was being pursued by the Hunt and his only chance for survival was to...  more »

This book started abruptly, making me wonder if I started this story in the middle of a trilogy or series. But once I got past that initial "bump" and accepted some assumptions that the story was based upon, I loved the book!

I thought the story line was original and the characters interesting. This was a very fast read.

This is a neat new slant on the idea of Faerie, from a writer who ought to be better known. I highly recommend it for anyone who likes fantasy.

From back cover: Max Ravenhill thinks he's human... but he's wrong. He's been given false memories by his Wardens, who don't want him to realize that he's been alive for over one thousand years.
Max and his Wardens are Riders--the Faerie folk--and back in their Lands, Max was the Prince Guardian, Keeper of the Talismans. As the Prince Guardian, Max lost a civil war and was banished to the Shadowlands, the human country. To prevent his escape, his memory was bound, along with his dra'aj, the magical energy of Fairie. His Wardens are with him to make sure the powerless Exile isn't acidentally killed by humans.
The Banishment is nearing its end when Warden Cassandra Kennaby gets an unexpected warning that Max is in imminent danger from his old enemy, the Rider now known as the Basilisk Prince. When the warning is confirmed by the appearance of the Hunt, the only way Cassandra can save Max is to risk returning him home before the end of the Banishment. Max finds himself in the Lands of the People, where no one and nothing--not even the Landscape itself--does what he expects. Cassandra and Max find that the dra'aj of the Lands has been waning during the Banishment, and the Basilisk Prince's power has been growing. Max's old supporters desperately need him to prevent the Basilisk from declaring himself High Prince and destroying the natural Cycles of the Lands. But it isn't really Max they need--it's his true self, the Prince Guardian. Max must decide whether to give up the only life he knows in order to become someone else. For only then can he hope to fight an ancient enemy he doesn't even remember.

Max Ravenhill is a history professor who discovers that he may have had past lives. When he sees Cassandra accross a room he is drawn to her but he doesn't realize that he has been in love with this woman during many of his existences.

Cassandra saves him from an attack by the Hound (The Hunt) when she kills it. As she looks for the other guardians (two) she finds that only she is protecting Max. At this point she tells Max that he is the Guardian Prince in a place he has no idea exists. With his life in danger, she convinces him to return to the land where he was born and grew up. The tale spirals out from there, is fast moving and exciting. I found this a remarkable read with a well developed plot.

The author created a world with interesting characters with depth. Even the personalities of secondary characters add so much to the story. I was surprised that I had not heard about this book but it's a remarkable writing. And, I was delighted to discover that there is a sequal called Shadowlands focusing on humans rather than mythical characters. This will be my next read and if it's as exciting as this read, I'll be in heaven.

In Malan's Narnia-spiced fantasy debut, which also contains dashes of de Lint, Rowling and Tolkien, Canadian Max Ravenhill thinks he's just a young professor of history with a crush on Cassandra Kennaby, a pretty martial arts expert, but he's really Dawntreader, a Faerie Prince Guardian, who lost a war and was exiled to the Shadowland of Earth. And Cassandra is actually his soul mate, Truthsheart, a Rider charged to protect him from the Hounds of the Hunt during the time of Banishment. Cassandra is also trying to keep him far from his evil brother, Dreamer of Time (aka the Basilisk Prince), who thinks Max knows the location of powerful Talismans.
