Miranda knew better than to protest at Brett Deakin's high-handed manner. The less she said, she decided grimly the sooner this ridiculous charade would be over. Sooner rather than later he was going to tire of of wasting his time and pity on an ungrateful, crippled girl, and she would be the first to sigh with relief!

Brett Deakin studied Miranda broodingly. As soon as he'd seen her he'd known she was going to mean something in his life. That in some way she was going to be instrumental in laying ghosts which had botherered him for so long. How had not been clear to him before. But it was now. He would marry her!
