The writing is uneven, the cat is an afterthought, and there is one scene that is unexpectedly pornographic for a novel that is otherwise a cozy. However, the plot did keep me guessing for most of the book.
This started out a little slow, but got better and better, with a surprise ending. I figured out part of the crime about 3/4 of the way through, but there was more... I really enjopyed this book, and plan to continue the series.
I loved this arthor. This is the first book of hers I've read. There is a cat in the book, but acts like a normal one. Not a cat who book. Iam going to read all of his books now.
Jane Stuart and her cat Winky are likeable characters and I thought the mystery was well done. I'd like to read more of this series.
Dust jacket copy: This delightful new series introduces Jane Stuart, a widowed young mother and literary agent who has a knack for solving mysteries, and Winky, her tortoiseshell cat who has a nose for trouble. In their very first case, Jane and the intrepid Winky give readers the purr-fect opportunity to pussyfoot around with crime.
The last thing a working mom like Jane needs is a call from her young son's school saying his nanny never arrived to pick him up. Now Jane's wondering what happened to pretty blonde Marlene, the daughter of an old friend she recently hired on a trial basis. It looks as if the nineteen-year-old has left without giving notice, and no one seems to know where she's gone. Her mother can't track her down. The police figure she's runy away. Could the young nanny have met with foul play? Never one to ignore a challenge, Jane thinks she'd better start snooping around.
Juggling book deals, rival agents, and a rocky romance with a handsome author, Jane's amateur sleuthing begins to uncover Marlene's shocking secret life, including her links to an erotic videotape, a boyfriend with violent tendencies--and a police record--and a flirtation with a mystery man. As Jane uncovers more and more evidence that Marlene's innocence died long ago, Winky has a critical clue that could reveal if a killer came in on little cat feet...and if that killer is getting ready to strike again.
A winning debut for a new detective duo, the Jane Stuart and Winky series is the cat's meow, and a great treat for mystery lovers.
One of the best written cozy mysteries I have read! Look forward to reading all in this series!
I just finished this book 2/20/2010 I found it to be rather intertaining with a cute twist at the end. I feel it ranks up there with Janet Evonoviches bounty hunter series. Very enjoyable.
Jane Stuart is a literary agent. This is a mystery and Jane becomes involved in trying to solve the case when her son's nanny is murdered.
