I just finished reading this little book and what an amazing find it was. It is a complicated story told by a very simple narrator: 12 year old David Hayden. This coming of age story is one that will stay with you for the rest of your life. The novel revolves around two brothers, one who is king of the county not to mention the small town doctor who is loved by all but has a secret. The other brother is the Sheriff who knows that he has to do what is right even if it means going against his brother. All told from the perspective of a 12 year old who had to grow up over the summer of 1948 in Bentrock Montana.

I read this years ago and LOVED it.  It was recommended to me.  I also read its prequel, Justice, but it was not even comparable.  I didn't really enjoy that one.

I didn't even know that Watson wrote a prequel to it. I am glad to find out that someone else enjoyed it too. This was just one of those little books that you can not put down.

Michael, I read this book when it first came out, again and again.  Then last year my husband got it for me as I couldn't find my copy after a move.  I loved it just as much with this last read as years back.

Bonnie,

I think you and I have the same feelings on the book. It is a magnificent read. Will be revisiting again in the future.
