Book #2 for April:
Moody Gets the Blues (Scott Moody, Bk 1)
Author: Steve Oliver
4*
This was a re-read for me. I first read it when it came out in 1998, and I remember it and it's sequel ( Moody Forever ) as being enjoyable reads. When I saw there was a third in the the series, and I got if on PBS, I decided I'd better get the first one and get reacquainted with the characters. I am pleased to say there was no sense of deja vu while reading this, and it was definitely still a good read. Scott Moody is a Vietnam vet, recently released from a mental institution, where the voices in his head sounded like Humphrey Bogart and told him to become a P.I. But while he's working on that, he drives a cab on the night shift in Spokane. This isn't a cozy mystery, nor is it a thriller. It's more of a "just plain" mystery. For his first case as a detective, he is hired to find a missing person. Much to everyone's surprise (especially his own), he succeeds in finding the wayward businessman, and brings him home to his comfortably well-off wife. In no time at all, however, said businessman turns up with a bullet in his chest, and Scott feels a heavy dose of guilt for finding him. Moody is a very interesting character - often depressed, sometimes on the edge (or just over it) of madness, father to a precious little girl. If you're tired of froofy bakers and pet-sitters that are often TSTL, then give Moody a try.

Vietnam Vet just released from the nut house decides to get his PI license. Missing person case turns to murder. I loved the dry humor, Moody really does have the blues!
