This was another great novel taking place in Discworld. I haven't read the books in order, and have found that you don't really need to. Things are described in such a clever way, that if you read them out of order, you are easily able to put the events into place on your own.
Death has to be one of my favorite characters. His inability to understand humans is endearing in the ways he goes about trying to understand what makes them tick. Getting drunk was quite funny. His adopted daughter and apprentice make for a very cute part of the "extended family" along with Albert. I especially cracked up over a scene where the young pair was up on a ladder reading Albert's life story... I won't tell you what happened, but it's a riot. (to me anyway--I have a warped sense of humor, I guess)
I highly recommend reading this one. It's always a treat when Death is in the story as much as he is this one.

This was my favorite of the Discworld series so far ... I really like the character Death because there's just so much to him - he's funny, strong, smart, but has his wistful needy moments (where he tries to get to know/understand humans better and what emotions mean). Mort is who he chooses to be his apprentice. Mort is a great character, too - he seems to complement Death, with all his questions and compassion and the way he grows a backbone. I loved the book too because although it's funny, it's not fluff - there's a lot here to think about.

Book 4 of Discworld series, I am reading the series in order and will be releasing them the same way. Warning this is a highly addictive series that is fantasy & magic based, where the improbable or one in a million events happen nine times out of ten.

This has been my favorite DiscWorld book so far. I loved âDeath'. He is a fantastic character and this book was all about him. His apprentice âMort' is also a very likeable character. I am hoping that I get to read more about these characters as I follow the Reading Guide order of books.

I really enjoy Terry Pratchett's style of writing. I love the footnotes that show up through out his books. This novel was wonderful. I love DEATH and the whole idea of his taking on an apprentice and taking a vacation of mortal pleasures. Wonderful.
As always, Pratchetts Discworld novels are unfailingly entertaining. In Mort, Pratchett introduces his personification of Death. However, the familiar hooded, skeletal figure with a sickle is getting kind of bored with rushing about from deathbed to murder scene The solution? To take on an apprentice. Mort is an awkward, clumsy farmers son, whose inconvenient habit of asking questions has made him more in-the-way than not at home and hes had no luck finding a position elsewhere. So when Death shows up and offers him the job, he thinks it might be interesting. However, when his very first job involves the destined assassination of a beautiful princess, his humanity (and love at first sight) could have disastrous consequences.
Terry Pratchett has opened a wide world to his readers again in this, the fourth book in the disc world series. Death is sympathetically portrayed as he struggles to understand humanity and his place in the world. This leaves the main character "Mort" Deaths new apprentice to struggle with the working of the universe.

Death decides he needs an apprentice and, fittingly, chooses a knobby-kneed youth named Mort. He gets into a little trouble with a girl, and then with a wizard, and then another girl, and another wizard. An entertaining read.
Fourth Discworld book and the introduction to one of my favorite characters, DEATH. What happens when DEATH takes on an apprentice and goes fly fishing for an afternoon? His apprentice, Mort, interferes with the pre-ordained demise of the young Princess Keli of Sto-Lat, that's what. And of course, that threatens to tear the fabric of the universe, with rather humorous consequences. You'll have to read this book to find out more. Heh! Much hilarity--and that's all the clues you're getting!
I found myself disappointed with this book. In general, I love Terry Pratchett's writing, sense of humor and really enjoy the discworld he's created. Having said all that, I just couldn't get into the characters in this book at all. I felt like the book dragged on and I kept waiting to get to the interesting part. I finally just forced myself to sit down and finish it. I'll still keep reading all of Terry Pratchett I can find though since one disappointment out of a dozen isn't so bad and I enjoy the author's witty sense of humor.

Not my favorite Discworld book, but that's like saying something isn't my favorite kind of chocolate cake. It's still yummy! Mort himself was fun, as was Ysabelle, but Princess Keli was just kind of there, I thought. I loved Cutwell, though. I don't know why, but I love crappy wizards. I was really torn on Death. Half the time he was funny and half the time he was kind of a jerk. I did enjoy the way time and history work on the Disc.

Another failure in my ongoing quest to appreciate Terry Pratchett.
There is so much to love in Pratchett, as cultural phenomenon. And I loved the Netflix adaptation of Good Omens (although they have had something to do with David Tennant and Michael Sheen in serious "cute as a bag of kittens" mode). But Pratchett himself, I just can't get into.
Perhaps I should wait for the adaptation of "Mort" with David Tennant and Michael Sheen. It's only a matter of time ...
