In September, 1893, Mary Baker Eddy, Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, advised the Directors to lay the foundation for a church building the following October. The contracts for excavation, pile driving, and stone foundations were signed on October 19, 1893. The first stone of the foundation was laid November 8, 1893.
