GOING after work. Figured hubby might like it, and he can use calibre to transfer any books he wants from my kindle.

Barbara, you have to connect with wifi and register it before  you can use it. After that, you don't ever have to connect it again (as far as I know).

The Nook is set up to use a credit card for the DRM. And the credit card is required to set up the machine. (You will probably need to register it and set it up with Adobe for DRM.) But I had a friend who set hers up with one of those pre-paid gift cards from a credit card company. She just has to make sure she keeps the credit card number on hand. This way the kids cannot buy any thing without her okay.

I always manage mine using Calibre. But I'm pretty sure the Nook needs an account, rather than just side load. I think the software updates all come from B&N.

None of the stores near my house have any left.. :(  No point driving so far to save and using it up on gas money.

yes. There is limited ePub space on these, as there is a part reserved for B&N books.

I did the search and it said my local RS didn't have any.  I would so have bought one for $20.

Do call and check.  This Nook Touch sale was on the blog Books on the Knob.  So there is a high chance that they are disappearing.

There is limited ePub space on these, as there is a part reserved for B&N books.

But let's be fair- there is room for approx 250 books in the non-B&N section. If you need more than that, the ereader will take up to a 32GB memory card, so that little Nook can conceivably hold 32,250 (or so) books that weren't purchased from Barnes and Noble.

That's true. I just get frustrated with B&N. My older Nook can be side loaded with much more, but it doesn't have the collections/ shelves. So they added a feature I like, and got rid of one I like. They totally failed to read my mind.

I've made a list of pros and cons, and the Kobo Glo comes out the winner between it and the paperwhite. Of course, these are things that are important to me and screen differences only apply to the differences between my two devices. For example, I didn't list the price....the Paperwhite (with ads) is cheaper. I have the one without ads, though.

Kobo - faster processor 1000mz (Paperwhite 800mz)

Kobo - takes micro SD card so holds more books

Kobo - lighter weight 185g (Paperwhite 221g)

Kobo - longer battery life (so they say) 55 hours vs 28 hours

Kobo - light is more uniform (at least on mine) (Paperwhite light is a bit blotchy)

Kobo - text display MUCH more customizable (margins, line spacing, fonts, font size, adding custom fonts)

Using Calibre to manage collections, easy to do with Kobo without rooting, can’t be done on Paperwhite without rooting.

Text color is darker and a little sharper on the paperwhite (but I am using a custom font on it).

Screen saver - Paperwhite must be jailbreaked and ad free, Kobo can use generic or last opened book cover, no rooting necessary.

Official cover - the Paperwhite case wins. However, if you can get a free official Kobo case, like I did, it's well worth it. As of today, the Kobo with free sleep cover deal is still on the powells.com web site, FYI.

But anne, thats just specs not a real review..:)  Does the kobo ACTUALLY last that many hours?? The faster processor from what I've seen reviewed does not make a huge difference.

I think the deal breaker for most is the SD card and light uniformity.   (Maybe weight for the older or disabled).

As for the screen saver, I'd not want people seeing the last or current book I am reading. I like the generic screens on the Kindle Touch.

I also read somewhere that jailbreaking the paperwhite slows it down further.. not sure how true that is and only one persons comment.  Any ideas on that?

xengab, I'll have to report back on battery life at another time. I've only had it since Saturday, which is when I charged it to 100%.

Both my Kindle Touch and my Kindle Paperwhite are jailbreaked and have custom screen savers. I do not display my book covers on them, just some custom pictures.

I don't think adding the jailbreak does anything to slow down a Kindle at all. However adding hacks afterwards, possibly could do so. I don't have an un-hacked one to compare. But between my 2 Kindles, the Touch responds faster than the Paperwhite, even though they have the same processor I think. I'll have to do some speed comparisons between the Touch and the Kobo.

Always interesting to see real reviews! I have a paperwhite, with only the extra fonts on it, so am interested to hear the comparisons when you get around to it.

Always fun to learn something. :  )

I think for reading experience and battery life, the Paperwhite and the Glo are probably about the same.

For organizational ability, the Glo wins.

For storage capacity, the Glo wins.

For official case niceness, the Paperwhite wins.

Hmm...battery life...according to Kobo's web site the Glo will go for 70 hours. That is pretty amazing!

Sweet! Will make sure to recommend it to patrons when they ask about getting them.  We have a few who don't want to buy from B&N or Amazon and the Sony is just behind the curve now.

How  much was the Glo? (sorry if it was said I must have missed it)
