Outstanding essays by brilliant women who also happen to be mothers.

"Can mothers think? Of course - the question doesn't merit a response. But it's no easy task to find written accounts of real-life motherhood that haven't had their sharp edges sanded off... This book is intended to be an antidote to the saccharine, oversimplified literature of motherhood. Motherhood is the most essential relationship in the continuity of life - and the wiping of snotty noses. It possesses the tenderness of a Mary Cassatt painting one minute, the surreality of a Diane Arbus photo the next... Both as readers and writers, we had longed to see motherhood addressed as the intellectual and emotional challenge we had found it to be. Becoming mothers had given us more to think about, not less, but only rarely could we find the outlets to express the complexity of those thoughts... The essays gathered here are an uncensored exploration of the subject - an articulate, heartfelt, and sometimes mystified acknowledgement that being a mother is a lifelong lesson in embracing contradiction..." A really good read.

A great book for moms and dads. So many of the essays in the book gave me chills for their honesty about motherood. Very few of the essays were flat. Worth you money.

Some of these shorts still give me chills while a few were flat. Still a keeper. Mom gave it to me after all.

I was given this book as a new mom in 2000. I gave it away, then regretted it - the voices of the authors echoed in my head as my children grew, and I grew as a parent. This book of essays is rich with wisdom, humor, pain and joy that I have found inspiring and comforting, especially in those moments when I feel most alone as a parent. Recently got it back through the Swap - I am enjoying reading it for the second time, and will not let it go again!
