Borrowing an idea from another member, I've started using the notes to track where I am in the wait list for the books I want. Checking in today, I see that I've actually moved DOWN the wait list for a few of my books. One of them by eight spots? What could be causing this?

I also noticed it this morning.  I have been keeping track for the last week, and today I moved down on one of the WL books, but only by one spot.

Anyone out there no why?

From the PBS Help Center:

Why did I move *backward* on my Wish List?

This happens when another member who was "ahead of you" in line previously (and who got an offer of the book already) gets back into line, for one of several reasons:

  • The member's Wish List book never arrived, and was declared lost in the mail
  • The member's Wish List transaction was canceled by the sender
  • The member had had her account on hold, and has now returned from vacation and unHeld her account. She will go back into line at her previous position when she does this: if she was "ahead of you" before, you will move back a space.

Please be assured that we would NEVER put another member ahead on the Wish List without good cause--in order to go ahead of others on the Wish List, a member MUST have Wish Listed that item earlier (on an earlier date) than they did.

I hope this answers your question.

How do you tell which number is you? This is a feature I've been hoping to find. :)  I usually make a note of what # I am when I wish for a book, but then I never know how many people come after me and wish for the same book...I would love to know what position I am in...

Marie: If you roll your cursor over the ! inside the grey circle on the verbiage to the right of the book cover on the book in your list it will tell you where you are in the list.

I have to say that I have seen my wait list spot rise as well, which is quite discouraging given how infrequently it appears my books come up anyway.

From the OP: "Checking in today, I see that I've actually moved DOWN the wait list for a few of my books. One of them by eight spots? "

Answer: Please be assured that we would NEVER put another member ahead on the Wish List without good cause--in order to go ahead of others on the Wish List, a member MUST have Wish Listed that item earlier (on an earlier date) than they did.

So 8 members with the same book on the wait list who had requested it before the OP all had their transacations cancelled?

Hi Marie

If you go to your wishlist under your account.  Under the title where it says date wishlisted you will see a small grey circle with an exclamation in it place your mouse over that circle and a box should come up saying 5 of 15.  That is your position to get that book.  It is really nice to be able to see that.  I would love it, if they would do that for your posted booklist!

8 does seem like a lot. But when you consider how many members there are and how many ways the line can be affected then it's not so many. If 1 book went lost, 1 book was cancelled after being accepted, 1 book was posted but never accepted and left to time out, 1 book was marked RWP, 1 book was posted by mistake and cancelled, 1 book was accepted but no marked mailed-there's 6 right there.  Also people could have had their accounts on vacation.  With a popular continually moving WL book it's conceivable that this could happen.

like mrslefty said, 8 does seem a little high but certainly possible

This is also a good spot, probably, to say that the number of wishers that shows on your wishlist page may not match exactly the number of wishers shown on the book details page ... for some of the same reasons mentioned above (offers pending, WLs on vacation hold)

You also have to remember just how many members there are in PBS!!!  I don't really know how many there are.  But there are currently listed 62,539 public profiles.  So moving down 8 places really isn't that much in light of how many members there must be.  there were 62,549 books mailed out in the last 7 days.  If you want to see the changing stats - go to Pulse of PBS under the Community Tab on your account page.

I would bet that many of them were members who came off of vacation holds. Most public schools have a week off at some point in Feb, March and or April. My parents are teachers in Maine and had a week off in Feb and another week off in April.  There are tons of members with school age kids here and that could account for a large number in addition to the situations that Mary listed.

Thanks Marsha, and everyone else for the replies.

I checked all of my wish list positions out again this morning. The one where I had gone down 8 spots, now I'm #312, when I was #294 on March 2nd! I dropped another 10 spots in one day. Even with the explaination, this is extremely discouraging. With another of my books, I went from #99 to #107. Boo :(

I would bet that with a book like that is pretty popular with a lot of people wishlisting that there are several transactions with the book pending at any given time--and it's probably a combination of lost books, books being marked RWAP (so they go back on the wishlist), people taking their accounts off vacation hold, etc. If you have doubts or questions though, I would contact PBS using the feedback and maybe they can let you know if there's a problem.
