My wish list is always full, and I would love it if it could be much longer. Two hundred books is just not a long enough list for me. If it could be 500 books long, I would probably order twice as many books from this site. Any chance of changing this anytime soon, PBS?

They are working on an unlimited WL now.  If you do a forum search on New WL you'll read about it.  It's supposed to combine the WL and RL with the available books going on hold.  You'll have to rank your WL books in the order you want them.

I agree wholeheartedly.  It's bad on SaDVD, and it'd be ten times worse here.

<organizes protest> No new wishlist!  No new wishlist! </protest>

Just let us add as many as we want, but make auto-request mandatory.  Then there won't be so many canceled wishes and we can get all the books we want.

I've given up on arguing against ranking, but still chant

"Don't combine! Don't Combine!  RL and WL separate!"

I quit using the RL at SaCD when it became combined with the WL.  I expect I'd do the same here, and that would make me sad.  It is useful, but combined with WL makes it much harder to use.

RL and WL separate!"

My personal issue w/ the whole thing, as well.  I think we're fighting a majorly uphill battle, though.

Mike, you can read about the new WL here:

Coming soon: the new Wish List

and if you happen to be a member, or become one, of SwapaDVD or SwapaCD you can see the list in action.

Not auto request- That just makes it a headache, what if you need to buy a credit?  Sorry but I like that feature.

Sure an unlimited WL would be great- not that I ever have a problem since I have about 20 WL..lol

Well I could care less about the ranking. I don't mess with it at Swapadvd and I still get WL offers.  Most of the WL lines move pretty steadily and they are giving credit for time served.  I think it will only be a problem for members who WL a lot of books that are rarely if ever posted.  Trying to rank them.  I don't really care for the combined WL and RL. I have over 700 books on my RL.  They are books I've looked at before and would get in a BOB offer or an outright deal.  But I probably won't ever order them just with a credit.  I also have a lot of my TBR books on there to see how many copies are posted. Although from what I understand we won't have to do that anymore.  That it'lls show how many are in the system.

ahhh I miss the good old days when the wishlist was unlimited and we didn't have to worry about ever having to rank them.

Nooooo!!  I cannot possibly be expected to "rank" my WL books, half the time I add them when I check what my buddies are wishing for!

I really believe that in attempting to improve the site (most of which I have agreed with - I LOVE "notes") I really do believe this is taking it a step to far - why not leave it alone?

I also don't think an unlimited WL is a good idea, forcing members to choose what you want on your WL is a good way of making sure that other people have a shot at the books you might not have room for on your list.

I guess I have to chime in and beat on this poor old horse again.   I don't want to rank books.  I want the RL - because even if they have how many of a title are available - there are still the books I'm unsure about but want to consider.  200 WL books is okay with me - I'd just fill it all up if it were a higher number.  I won't be ranking books.  I just can't do that.  I might be able to rank a couple only because I want them to fill out the missing slots of a series.  To me, adding this "new, improved" WL is adding complication to a simple system that works.  I may be wrong and it would be easier somehow on TPTB to add it.  But I don't think that newcomers are going to benefit so much from it as they think.  With almost 3 milion books - there should be enough for any one.  And the helping the newcomers could be done by letting them have a couple of top 2 spots after they list and mail a couple of books (to make sure that some books actually get mailed out).   Beyond that I think it's just going to be a big headache for the members.  But I could be wrong.

I emailed through Contact Us and the Suggestion link and received a response of "we are taking all member comments and suggestions into consideration while we work on the upgrade".

So don't limit your comments to the forums let PBS know how you feel.

so, i am not at swapadvd or swapacd, but i do have a question about this new 'ranking' business thats in the works... say i have 200 wl books and i have them all ranked. what happens when i add a new book as # 4 or whatnot? do i have to rerank all of those books behind it on the list? or does it auto rank them? *confused*

I also would like unlimited WL and separate WL and RL and no ranking.  Apparently, that's how PBS was in the beginning and for some reason it didn't work out.  Bummer for me...  I am in NO hurry for the new system, and will be glad if it is never implemented here.

Your other rankings would automatically adjust, Megan.  And there would probably be an auto-rank feature for those of us who don't want to mess with ranking things.

Um, I just noticed a girl on here who has 201 books on her wish list!

* How weird. I just tried, and my list is limiting mine to 200.

Heather, you can actually end up having more than 200 books on your WishList if your WishList is full at 200, and you request a book in the system and that request ends up being canceled and there are no other copies in the system.  The requested book goes on your WishList at #1 on WL for that book so you will get the next copy.  (That's why my WL is currently at 201.)

(If one of my WL books comes in, I will be down to regular 200, and I won't be able to add another book to take its place and keep it at 201 - that's just temporary.  I wouldn't mind at all having a WL book come in and drop my list back to 200...  haven't had a WL book for a while now...  hehe, I'm impatient!)

Ahhhhhhhhhh that must explain it, because boy, I could not race to the book lists fast enough to see if I could add more!

Combing WL and RL is a terrible idea.  When I find a book I like, I put it on my WL if the book is not available and I put it on my RL if the book is currently available.  When I am ready for another book and a book from my WL has not arrived I like having a list of available books on my RL from which to select.

I do not understand why ranking would be such a bad thing. I mean I do this already on netflix, if I am understanding this right. The ones I want most I move to the top of my list and if they are available, I get them sooner than DVDs on the bottom on my list. No big deal.... am I missing something?

Kim, people say "but I want them all the same" and feel that if they have waited longest, they should get the book/DVD/CD.  Personally, I can see it both ways and do not have strong feelings about that part either way.  (I feel strongest about losing the RL.  I don't like it at DVD and CD already, and know I won't like it here)   You are right, though, in that the ones you want the most go at the top, so you are not missing anything.  :-)

I haven't read all the replies, but the WL used to be unlimited and the feature got abused by a few, so they had to change it.  Eventually they will change it back, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

I don't think an unlimited WL is a good idea either. People will put anything on their WL just incase they want it and then cancel when the offer comes through. I think the boards will be filled with complaints from people posting WL books that get declined a lot before being accepted.  Maybe increase from 200 but still leave a cap.  It does force people to say well maybe I wont' want that book afterall.  I think an unlimited WL will make the lines for some books really, really long which will be really discouraging to new members who find all the books they want are WL and see the really long lines.

The issue I have with the "rating" is the very complicated and convoluted method of "earning points" based on how you rank your wish and how long you wish for it compared to another member's ranking and time waiting.  If FIFO is good enough for the rest of PBS why isn't it for the Wish List?

And I really really don't want my RL on my Wish List - it seems that if you don't "enter" it correctly the book will automatically be requested and we've all seen examples of how quickly book requests are accepted and *poof* there goes your ability to correct your mistake.
