I'm not against non-book listings for items that have ISBNs on them (and obviously books that need to be posted via the no-ISBN option), and I'd be happy to get some items like that, but I just requested and received a disappointing "audio book" of The Prince of Egypt. I thought it was going to be a reading from members of the cast of a kid's book with a couple of the songs from the film included as a sort of promotion, but it's just a sampler (6 songs) of the actual soundtracks.

This was the PBS listing and this is the SaCD listing that the UPC brings up. I'm such a moron though... I messaged the sender about it instead of just marking it RWAP like I should have. I didn't realize that it was a no-ISBN listing and was kind of feeling like it was partially my fault for not looking up the UPC (plus it was sealed and I didn't notice the problem until I'd pulled the plastic off). So I offered to basically let them off the hook if they game me a half refund. The CD is on SaCD with 37 copies available. Which means I'll still have wasted a credit because I wouldn't have ordered the sampler to begin with. Now I feel like I'm offering to reward them for posting on the wrong site and trying to line-jump those 37 people.

Here's what I PMed:

  • This item should not have been posted to PBS even as a "no ISBN" item because it is exclusively a music CD (and I now see that it has a proper listing on SwapaCD). I expected a primarily spoken word CD in the vein of an audio book with some of the songs from the movie, which is why I requested it. I'm especially disappointed because, when I opened it, I saw that it's essentially a sampling of the actual, full-length soundtracks, which I would have gotten instead if I had not trusted that it was listed legitimately on PBS. I believe that a partial refund of my credits would not be unreasonable as it would fairly split the loss given that the item was unpostable to this site, but if I had checked into it I could have avoided the improper listing.

Should I have just marked it RWaP? Should I send a follow-up message that I was mistaken about the 1st message and want a full refund? What do you think?

-edit-

I just did a grammer edit, nothing major.

Renee, if you haven't had a response from the sender, I see nothing wrong with re-addressing the matter basing it on the posting rules.  Yes, you should have 'RWAP'ed it, but hind-sight and all that...  Is the sender a new(ish) member?  If so, cutting them some slack isn't a bad thing -- otherwise, I wouldn't.  If you get no response, or a refusal, I'd copy my PM(s) and send to Admin asking the best was to proceed....

Audiobooks

I have ordered 13 audiobooks from PBS and I don't order them without knowing some info first.

What concerns me about that  Prince of Egypt listing is there's no Amazon link so there's no info for you to check and reviews. The description talks about music so that would have   concerned  me if I was interested in an audiobook.   I find you really do have to read the listings and get info from the Amazon links if necessary.  If I'm not sure something I would probably also p.m. the sender.

Since this was not a true audiobook I think you probably can contact PBS and see if this can be retroactively corrected.  I think from what I read in the rules about posting is this does not meet PBS guidelines.  I think it's OK to have a book that happens to have a sampler CD inside and that is still considered a book. In this case there's no book right.?

I'm not sure but I think I remember seeing a  Prince of Egypt book at Goodwill with a CD in it.

I bet this CD was part of a book and that's why there's no ISBN or UPC.

I just got a response (it also turns out they've been a member for a while [pre-2010]). They're super sure that they're allowed to post music CDs, but I'll let you know how it goes. I'm hesitant to post their reply here; it feels like bad form, but I'd really like to so that you have a more complete picture.

Anna: Renee, if you haven't had a response from the sender, I see nothing wrong with re-addressing the matter basing it on the posting rules.

I was so mad earlier that I didn't even think to see if they were new or not... I ordered a couple of audio books recently and I found out that one of the others is moldy (not from the same sender) and they're saying that it's not their fault. >.> It seems unlikely based on how much mold there is and the travel time... When it rains it pours ^.^()

Valerie: To touch on both points, I felt like it was a little bit my fault for not checking into it further, but the CD does have a UPC (600445801127) and they would have had to wait in the FIFO to send it on the CD side (37 copies), so I feel like they either totally didn't know how to use the site or else they were just trying to avoid posting it properly and cheat an extra credit out of it.

Music cds are not allowed according to the rules.

If she persists in the belief that she can post music CDs here, you can refer her to the Help doc "What can be posted for swapping here?" It pretty clearly defines an audio book, and the CD you describe does not meet that definition.

...

Not allowed:

...

  • Music recordings, spoken-word recordings (these can be swapped as accompaniments to a bound book *for 1 credit for the set*, or at SwapaCD if they are in the database there. These are not "audio books," which are books read aloud by a narrator).

...

Joanne and Cathy: Part of her response is that if I will return the CD she will refund my credits. I've linked her the FAQs about refunds/postage and CDs ^.~

June E., thanks for contacting Renee directly - I meant to add that the listing was NOT in line with PBS posting rules and they would (will) remove it when it's brought to their attention.  I'm currently on vacation, so only on-site hit & miss.  If the listing still shows when I return home, I'll send the info to the PBS Team.

Problem seems to be resolved. She refunded and I think she's deciding if she wants to send the credit for the return trip. Thanks all!
